CHHIP Expands into Four New Schools

Broadleaf Health and Education Alliance is thrilled to announce that for the 2014 school year, which has just begun, we are expanding our reach from 7 to 11 primary schools in three partner communities! The additional schools, all of which have been monitored for the last year as part of our control group for assessing CHHIP's impact, will extend the program's direct reach to over 500 children.

All of these children will participate in a year-long health education curriculum, receive basic health interventions such as deworming tablets, and will be screened for health problems that require referral to the public health system.

20/20 Solutions

On December 13, CHHIP organized a visit to the Jamgon Kongtrul Eye Centre for individuals whom CHHIP School Health Activists identified as having potential vision problems. At this highly specialized centre, thirteen children and five adults received free vision screening and treatment. By connecting CHHIP children to local resources, CHHIP is able to operate efficiently while finding sustainable solutions to common childhood illnesses.

Developing positive relationships with teachers and administrators is an essential part of CHHIP's strategy for improving the health of school children.

Growing Strong

Children grow up fast, literally and figuratively. But just how much do they grow in a year? CHHIP monitors children's growth by measuring their height, weight, and BMI scores every six months. This lets us know if children are developing at an age-appropriate rate, and allows our School Health Activists to identify children who might need extra attention from a physician. This simple but essential intervention is just one of the ways CHHIP has been able to understand and address the health needs of the children with whom we work.
