Just in time for Halloween, I've posted the entirety of Spooky Comics #1 on my blog.

SC is a comic book that a bunch of great artists created in a few hours at last month's Saturday Night Drink n' Draw at Chi-PRC. Featuring hilarious work by Mike Centeno, Mike Freiheit, Johnny Misfit, Eric Bartholomew, Sage Coffey and myself.

Hallowzine is TONIGHT! We're excited to see all of you in your spookiest costumes and celebrate the diverse set of readers and performers we have lined up! Chi-PRC! 7 p.m. $5 donation goes towards helping support CZF 2017!

The final reader we are highlighting here is Jack Murphy. Jack is a high school English teacher living in Chicago. He has published two collections of poetry and flash fiction. His work has been featured in Southside Weekly among other publications.

Chicago Zine Fest presents... 

HALLOWZINE 2016! -A Night of Spooky Readings!-

Five years of spooky stories: it's our fifth annual Hallowzine!

We'll have zine & comics artists telling you their creepiest, funniest, most Halloween-y stories. Just a $5 donation to Chicago Zine Fest will get you in to hear great artists and enter our door prize raffle with fabulous prizes!

The fright night of ghoulish performers includes: a zine reading by Jack Murphy, video presentation by Jade Beach, comics from Bianca Xunise, and the musical comedy stylings of Fresh2Death.

Here are some photos from this past weekend’s Saturday Night Drink n’ Draw at Chi-PRC. All photos by Eric Bartholomew.

This DnD was different than past events. We had a special guest illustrator (Mike Freiheit, not pictured here) lead a workshop using various toys he brought from his collection as well as some panel templates we printed earlier. Each artist created a two-page story, jam comic, or exquisite corpse using the toys as characters, props, etc. Then using Chi-PRC’s risograph printer, we collated the comics into a 14-page pumpkin-orange anthology titled ‘Spooky Comics No. 1′. This was our first time testing out the riso at DnD, so we were a bit anxious to see if it would hold up, which it did, producing over 30 beautiful copies of our newborn comic!

If you’re in Chicago and interested in seeing the comic, I’ll be putting a limited number of the comics at Quimby’s for free. I’ll probably post the individual comics sometime soon. 

This was by far the most productive, energetic, and engaging DnD we’ve had yet. It’s always gratifying to see everyone’s styles come together when we create comics together, and this time was special since we were all able to leave with printed books in our hands! Thanks to Mike Freiheit for leading the workshop, all the artists that attended and contributed work to the comic book, and Chi-PRC for having us!

The next Drink n’ Draw at Chi-PRC (with a new featured guest!) will be Saturday, November 19 at 8 pm. More info in the next couple of weeks!

Saturday Night Drink n' Draw continues its monthly residency at Chi-PRC (858 N. Ashland Ave.) with two exciting additions on Saturday, October 8 at 8 p.m. ! 

The first is the honor of having cartoonist and illustrator Mike Freiheit join as a special guest instructor for a portion of the evening's workshop activities! Mike is the writer and illustrator of 'Monkey Chef', a comic detailing his experiences working as a primate care taker in South Africa, as well as his new mini-comic 'Go Fuck Myself!' The second addition of SNDnD is just as exciting. Chi-PRC has acquired a working risograph printer in their workspace and we're now free to use it! SNDnD attendees will get the opportunity to print their work on the riso printer and leave with a copy of a comic created at they created at the event. Having the riso printer is exciting because it will allow artists to experiment and share their work with one another in ways that we have yet to try at SNDnD.

A suggested $3 will be asked at the door to keep the lights on at Chi-PRC as well as help pay for the riso-ink. As always, the event is BYOB and open for all over the age of 21 to attend. Brings your own snacks, drawing equiptment, musical instruments (yes, we've seen it before!) and other work you might want to share at this community-building creator's night!

If you have any interest in riso-printing or how to print your own book, I highly recommend signing up for Matt Davis’s (Perfectly Acceptable Press) Intro to Risograph Printing class at Chi-PRC. It’s a fascinating process and Matt’s an insightful, knowledgable guy. I’ve printed a few books with Matt and CZF gets our posters done through him, so I can’t have higher praise for what he does.

Registration is $50 and if this class is anything like the one I took, you’ll get to leave with a copy of a rise-printed book you’ll make with all the attendees.
