Chiastolite
Chiastolite is a gem which is known for its unusual and distinctive pattern, a grey/ black cross-shaped pattern going throughout the rock, with its leading colouring being browns, beige, reds and so on. This gem is a variety of andalusite as well as having inclusions of carbon and graphite which is what makes up the cross shape. It has a hardness of 5-6 depending on the quality of the rock. It was first mentioned in 1648 in the book “De Gemmis et Lapidibus,” but was not officially recorded until 1754 by José Torrubia who was a natural scientist and historian from Spain. Over the years the gem has been called many names such as Apis Crucifer and Lapis Cruciatur as well as its current name coming from the greek word chiastos, meaning “cruciform” or “arranged diagonally,”. It is found in metamorphic rocks or metamorphosed sediments and currently has active mining locations in China, Spain, South Australia, South America (Chile and Brazil) and more. Chiastolite symbolises evolution, protection, harmony and is also associated with the root chakra.
