We have new chicks in a brooder. They are learning how to get water from the waterer with nipples. They tap the nipples and they release water, so simple. The chicks love it! Pecking gives them great satisfaction and with this method it also provides water. One week exam! The baby chicks are one week old and they received a check up to see how they’re growing. They are active and healthy. Their plumage is strikingly beautiful, appetite increasing as is their water intake. They will soon be moved to a larger brooder and need less extra heat. Not surprisingly, the showstoppers of the Backyard Chicken Basics class were the new baby chicks, we call them Brooder Buddies. They are officially out of the incubator and in the brooder now. We were glad to have eight survive and sorry that two died shortly after hatching. The remaining eight are healthy and very active. They started eating, their first meal was some scrambled egg and they’re now having chick starter. They will receive some insect treats soon just as they would if they were with a mother hen.
