After the Alpha is defeated and Drago most likely dead Berkians don't really realize that Stoick, their chief is actually dead until Gothi has Hiccup kneeling and taking on the mantle. Kt doesn't really settle in, because they think, no way is their chief dead. Its not the first time bad men have bluffed nad called out someone to be dead when in fact they were not. They don't realize until Hiccup stands up, officially their new chief and not directing anyone to find his father.
