Turnabout Gala: Part II

The game is afoot as Miles Edgeworth and the LAPD Homicide Division set after Landon Downings, the man last seen with Kristoff Reeves before the suspect’s sudden death. The police department has an all points out trailing Downing’s silvery sports car. There are two deaths and two casualties already, including Edgeworth himself after a vicious attempt on his life. The whole LAPD knows that the killer or killers have to be stopped ASAP, especially since there are rumors of atroquinine surfacing again in the city.

“Chase, here, Mr. Edgeworth,” the grizzled old detective spits into his radio while his car is careening down the highway. “I’m with Prosecutor Gavin, and we’re trailing Downings now. Where the hell are you?”

“Officer Kitt, reporting, sir!” comes the reply. Kitt is rather busy with driving, but he responds anyway. “We’re west of the suspect’s last known location. Detective Skye and the others are on their way, too!”

Chase locks onto the suspect’s car and barks coordinates into the radio: the location is near the back entrance of Gourd Lake Park, and the car is speeding dangerously.

“All hands on deck and buckle the hell up! He’s in our sights now! Kitt, I need you over here!”

“10-4, sir! We’re not far—hang on, Chief!”

It had been a while since Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth has called him into his office personally to discuss a case he would like Klavier to take. Usually, when he gets his cases assigned, it happens in writing and usually those cases turn out to be easy ones (at least at the first glance). The fact that Chief Edgeworth wants to see him personally tells Klavier that this case is something special.

Still, he doesn’t even try to muse too much about it. There’s no reason to think about what kind of case it could be, especially with absolutely zero information on hand. If he wants to know the details behind the case he has to go and see his boss.

Which Klavier, of course, does. He shows up at Edgeworth’s door just at the assigned time. He doesn’t like people who show up late and therefore tries to be on time himself too. He straightens his back before raising his hand and knocking on the door. Klavier lingers for a second or two before opening the door and stepping into the big office.

You asked for me, Herr Chief Prosecutor?

[Location: Gatewater Hotel Ballroom]

The night is young, and festivities for the thirty-third annual Los Angeles Authors Awards Gala had only just started barely an hour ago. Los Angeles’s literary glitterati are decked out in their finest to celebrate their best and brightest. And who else should be in attendance--with an invitation and a nomination for a children’s book award, no less!--than newly successful Laurice Deauxnim, also known as Larry Butz. He hadn’t quite managed to find a date, so he’s chatting it up with a few ladies here and there with a glass of champagne balanced in one hand and a miniature sketchbook in the other. Why not impress the girls with an impromptu sketch of their lovely likenesses? Especially raven-haired Lisette DeLire, his competition for the award. She doesn’t seem impressed with his work at all, but she takes the sketch with a clipped smile before whisking off with a flourish.

A dogged Larry is on her heels, intrigued by a girl who plays hard to get. She’s lost in the crowd, though, with only a glimmer of her sequined gown as a clue when it catches the light. He continues in pursuit--that is, until he starts feeling a bit dizzy. Perhaps the champagne is stronger than he thought? With a muffled apology to a gentleman he bumps into, he stumbles off to the men’s room to wash his face and pull himself together. He doesn’t make it there, and everything that happens from there on out is a blur. He could swear he saw Lisette again, and she doesn’t look happy. Faces, shadows, another sip of champagne to clear his head (why does he feel so sick, he’d barely had anything to drink?), then--

The next thing he knows, he’s slumped against a wall backstage with a gun in his right hand and a pool of blood at his feet...and the dead body of Lisette DeLire not far away.

TURNABOUT GALA: COURT RECORD EVIDENCE

Below is the collection of evidence found in Turnabout Gala:

Crime Scene Photo: Lisette DeLire

Victim lies on her stomach backstage with blood surrounding her. Suspect Larry Butz is tied up with zip ties and is listless and delirious on the ground. Beside him is a shattered champagne glass.

Autopsy Report: Lisette DeLire

Victim was shot in the back by a small handheld pistol, causing instant death from exsanguination. Time of death: approximately 10:01 p.m.

Murder weapon: Lisette DeLire

A small handheld pistol bearing the fingerprints from Larry Butz’s right hand. The gun belonged to the victim herself and was smuggled into the Gatewater Hotel the night before the gala. 

Ammunition:

Discovered tucked away in DeLire’s hotel room in a pile of lacy underthings.

Map of Gatewater Hotel:

Blueprints of theatre and backstage area, ballroom, hotel floor plan layout, presidential suites, and laundry areas.

Gala Program:

Lists all attendees, honorees, benefactors, and speakers at the Gala. Butz and DeLire were nominated for the same award. Robert Steele, CEO of a major publishing company, is the biggest donor for the event.

Stick of charcoal:

Fell out of Larry Butz’s pocket. Evidence suggests that the killer was right-handed, though traces of charcoal on Butz’s left hand disproved that he was the one who actually fired the gun.

Broken champagne glass:

Discovered to have held a dangerously-high level of phenobarbital mixed inside the champagne. DeLire drugged Butz with it before she died.

The Black Swan Ballerina:

Lisette DeLire’s picture book, discovered in her hotel room. A handwritten code was written inside the cover. 3-10-C … 37-7-B … 38-1-S … 6-3-A … 22-3-T … 10-4-B … 15-11-S =  “Come Back Stage At Ten Bring Shot.”

Zip ties: 

Used to restrain Larry Butz at the first crime scene by Kristoff Reeves. Another set of zip ties were given to Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth at the detention center.

Murder Weapon: Kristoff Reeves

Unknown. 

Autopsy Report: Kristoff Reeves

Unfinished as of Part 1. Cause of death: most likely atroquinine poisoning.

Crime Scene Tape: Kristoff Reeves

Depicts time of Reeves’ death. Victim sits in a chair and rubs his throat, then begins to tremble. His arms and shoulders jerk back and he collapses to the ground, dead before he lands. Time of death: approximately 6:30 p.m.
