i personally really dislike the notion from either side of fandom that whoever ended up canon in this present moment proved something about a connection between physical proximity and the likelihood of a relationship thereby manifesting. that kind of argument to me is potentially capable of walking back swaths of canon development we see in either relationship. this isn’t a competition, it never has been a competition, and to act like either boy’s physical circumstances facilitated his likelihood to end up with chihaya over the other boy is crazy to me! (1) i don’t think there’s any argument to be made that tchy being canon in the last chapter is proof that taichi was ultimately always meant to end up with chihaya bc he was closer to her. that ignores the fact that they’ve been friends for several years and never ended up dating even once bc their hurdle was interpersonal issues. they lacked an ability to communicate with each other effectively and when acting as co-leaders functioned as unhealthily codependent. there was never going to be a relationship between them so long as those communication issues and insecurities between them existed. and those could have lasted for years! they could have gone completely unaddressed like they did for the first two years of high school, and then where would they have ended up. with taichi consistently resenting chihaya for things in his control and with chihaya consistently anxious about taichi for things out of her control. it would be no way to live. (2) i don’t think arata joking that it’s too late is supposed to be extrapolated into this idea that he never had a chance because he was too far away. that ignores the fact that so much of his relationship with chihaya was built on the presence of distance in the first place. that distance set the stage for the yearning between them because they were apart from one another. hence the several magpie bridge allusions. obv the weight of that distance was alleviated over time as they both began to shape dreams that expanded beyond the realm of wanting to see each other again but had the distance not existed in the first place what would the nature of their relationship be? the entire dynamic would change and we would lose out on so much of the beautiful imagery and poetry of how sometimes distance does indeed make the heart grow fonder. sometimes distance does drive us towards dreams we don’t initially know how to shape on our own until the time we do, and then that distance becomes easier to bear and is no longer something we’re as desperate to ensure is physically bridged. ultimately i think suetsugu is simply illustrating two kinds of distance and how they impact her characters, and each journey has meaning in and of itself in how it bridges that distance, whether physical or emotional. i don’t think chihaya’s first real relationship is supposed to be some testament to which set of circumstances worked in comparison to the other. if it was i doubt suetsugu would so cleverly reverse the circumstances and make tchy be cities apart while chyrt are in the same city. this has never been about proving one relationship’s superiority over the other. it’s a story about the way people grow and shift and change and how that applies as much to our emotions bc chihaya has cared deeply, on a romantic level, about both boys, but when or how she cared about either boy is simply a manifestation of her feelings in a given moment in time, as are all love stories in our life. it’s a testament to the beauty of youth
😳
...The way Suetsugu writes romance though. Not sappy. Not a generic exchange of I love you’s, no. Suetsugu integrates the overarching theme in the romance and no, it is not an easy task, in pain of sounding boring. It isn’t. She’s consistent. It’s compelling. It satisfies but at the same time leaves the reader wanting more for the ship. Leaves the reader falling more in love with the ship, in love with and invested in their individual growth, in love with Hyakunin Isshu and karuta all the same.
