Child Behaviour Problems - Actions speak louder than words.
It is said that children do not often listen to what their parents say but they always learn from what their parents do. I heard a story from one of my clients today that is both charming and poignant and demonstrates this fact perfectly.
My client has a 6 year old son who was asked what the colours of the traffic lights mean.
"Red means stop" he said, " green means go" and " yellow means go faster" !!!
This little boy had watched his dad intently and sure enough his dad stopped at the red light, continued at the same speed for a green light but when the light was on amber he put his foot down to get through the lights before they turned back to red!! The young boy didn't question what his father did he just observed and assumed it was the correct thing to do.
This is a simple example of how impressionable children can be, they almost take the information in by osmosis. It also highlights how problems can arise when parents do not do what they say. In fact I find parents often trip themselves up this way without realising why. Here are another couple of examples.
A client of mine wanted her teenage daughter to be punished when she got angry and broke a valuable ornament. Yet the same lady lost her own temper and justified it by saying " I am only human "
Finally a client was teaching her young child to be honest but when he asked her how old she was she lied. This may not seem very important but one day that child will realise his mum had lied to him and if she lied about her age what else might she have lied about?
Parents your actions do speak much louder than your words so if you want a tip to help prevent child behaviour problems just take a quick look at yourselves and make sure you are not breaking your own rules.
