Child’s Play (2019)
How could they make a Child’s Play movie without Brad Dourif or Don Mancini? By reinventing the story for the modern age and taking it in a different direction. With loads of dark laughs, nasty kills, and some clever bits of writing, this remake delivers.
The Kaslan Corporation, makers of everything from smart TVs to self-driving taxis has just launch Buddi, a high-tech doll which connects to its products, walks, talks, learns and will imprint onto its owner - becoming a friend to the end. After a disgruntled worker disables a dolls’ security protocols, it’s picked up by Karen Barclay (Aubrey Plaza), who gives it to her 13-year-old son, Andy (Gabriel Bateman). Andy uses “Chucky” (voiced by Mark Hamill) to make friends, which stirs feelings of jealousy within the toy.
No voodoo, no foul-mouthed wisecracks, and certainly no Tiffany. This one's quite different from the 1988 original - in a good way. For instance, the doll only becomes evil after confusing violent images (astute horror fans will recognize the film Andy and his friends watch as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) as good-natured fun and taking its friendship programming to the next level, turning it into a murderous obsession.
All stories, to a certain extent, depend on stupid decisions. If the cops called for backup, the shootout probably wouldn’t happen so it’s important for the lone officer to go inside the house and deliver to the audience the thrill-filled climax. If the people in Jurassic Park had built their enclosures better, the movie wouldn’t have happened… but then what? Dumb decisions happen in Child’s Play but these choices are made by teens who are overwhelmed by the events around them. It makes what would normally seem like bad writing good because as an audience member, you realize Andy, Falyn (Beatrice Kitsos), and Pugg (Ty Consiglio) have come up with a TERRIBLE way to deal with Chucky. You laugh at their feeble attempts to cover up the toy's bloody crimes. They're just making it worse for themselves. You can't wait to see what comes next.
Child’s Play is not a movie that’s “good” for you. It goes out of its way to not have any class whatsoever with plenty of violence directed at children, gruesome deaths so outrageous you’ll laugh, and one scene after another that shows you’re supposed to be having fun as these people fight for their lives. Initially put off by the ugly Buddi design, I turned around, eventually finding the naive creature hideous in a kinda cute way. There are a couple of moments where the special effects are a bit rickety. Overall, however, this is a success. After the creatively bankrupt Aladdin, and a slew of other disappointing remakes including The Upside, Dumbo, Miss Bala, What Men Want, and The Hustle, 2019's Child's Play is refreshingly, hilariously nasty. (Theatrical version on the big screen, June 29, 2019)
