What do you mean by Malnutrition?
Why many children suffer from malnutrition?
How pregnant women are affected by malnutrition?
Yes, there are many questions which arise when we go for our field project and observe that many children are in the trap of malnutrition. Lack of proper nutrition, not having enough food to eat, not eating the right things, or being unable to use the food that one does eat, is what exactly malnutrition means.
Palghar District is just 107 km away from Mumbai, which is Maharashtra's capital city and economic powerhouse. It is rather surprising that despite this proximity, over 600 children have died due to malnutrition this year; and this number keeps rising. The talukas of Jawahar and Mokhada in Palghar district are the worst affected with almost 900 malnourished children.
In 2016, an RTI document revealed that 17,000 women and children have died due to malnutrition in the tribal districts across Maharashtra. In Jawahar, Mokhada talukas the underlying cause of maternal is child marriage. Due to archaic cultural practices, girls as young as 13 get married. The healthcare facilities in Jawahar are either non-existent or skeletal. Specialist doctors do not want to practice in the rural area, and this only adds to the problem. The main hurdle in improving the living conditions for women in children in these areas is increasing the level of awareness in a community that is largely uneducated and thus resistant to change.
