There’s really no such thing as off-duty for a police lieutenant. Even when he isn’t getting a call from a subordinate or superior with a problem that needs fixing, just being outside his home is an invitation for ‘the job’ to creep up on him. He can say it isn’t his problem, but it is. And even when he’s in the middle of lunch ( peacefully alone ), he can’t ignore a young child attempting to get his attention.
“Hey, kid--” Setting his sandwich down on the crinkled foil it was served in, he wipes his hands on a napkin before shifting in his seat to direct himself more towards her. He scans the immediate area; finding no concerned parents and hearing no distressed shouts, he looks back down to her.
“Are you okay? You lost?” With nothing on him to readily identify him as an officer, it worries him that a young girl would just approach a strange man she doesn’t know, but he can at least be grateful she’s approaching the right strange man. His badge is pulled, quickly flashed, and tucked away again.
“It’s okay, I’m a cop. I can help you get back home.”
