Chapter 3 - Be Thankful

Warm orange rays from the sun greeted me. Dew blanketed the slanted roof I had slept on during the night. I stood up and shook the thin tarp I used to shield myself from the elements. The cold of the morning breeze bit at my skin, causing bumps to scale my body. 

        Moments like this are thoughtless, full of motion, lacking in emotion. A routine I had grown used to. 

        The previous night I tried to clean my hand from any of the mold-like disease that ghoul might have given me. I had to scratch through the divots and cracks with freezing fingers as well as wash away the blood with the rest of whatever water I had. It was painful and now I need more water. I’m especially annoyed now that I have blood caked on the sleeve of my jacket.

        I need to find a water source.

        The suburbs, my greatest enemy. There is a water tower, I can see it, but it is not within decent walking distance. It is just far enough away that I am going to throw a fit about it. 

        Life would be so much easier if I had a group of people with me, then I could send one of them to their death: a 1 mile walk. I shouldn’t be complaining, I know. 

        I'm. 

        Just. 

        So. 

        Tired. 

        I would think by now I would have enough endurance to get up every morning and hike just a little bit, but I just want to snuggle into these beautifully crafted shingles… 

        Actually on second thought, I don’t. 

        I clamored down the side of the house with utmost grace as one can.. I fell off. Thankfully, my injured hand caught the side of the gutter. You heard that right. The gutter. You know.. the metal thing on the side of most houses to funnel rainwater away from the house.. the thing that can’t hold even a small child holding onto the side of it, that thing. I fell again. Having time to brace myself for impact I didn’t hit my head or break a leg, I landed on my feet. Pain still shot up my legs and it felt like a ton of needles tried to acupuncture the bottom of my feet.

        Hopefully the walk to the water tower is less eventful as I stumble my way there, each step more painful than the last. At least there is a sidewalk.
