In short, I loved them!  All in very different ways lol. 

Ryuu as Hoshiumi almost steals the show a little bit.  He’s very athletic and the choreography is built to show that off.  In fact, he does more in this show than Hinata does, so he’s definitely the more impressive little giant for this particular production.  He does a lot of jumps from high places with a lot of break-dancing and Hinata does see a snippet of him in a match when they get to Nationals.  At the camp, he’s really aggressive with everyone around him, he wants people to take notice of the fact that he’s short, he wants to wow people and surprise them, and he’s just really really fiery.  He’s got great comedic timing and delivery for some of his lines, and it’s kind of adorable seeing him wanting to get Kageyama or Sakusa to react to him.  His Hoshiumi is very intense all the time, and some of it reminds me of Kenta’s Hinata actually.  

Yuunosuke as Atsumu is very suave and charming.  They really play up his interactions with Kageyama a lot, before and after where he tells him he plays like a goody-two-shoes.  He definitely keeps baiting Kageyama’s senses as a setter, telling him he might be better off as a spiker because he seems to be having more fun as a spiker.  And in the beginning and the end when the play shows Karasuno at Spring High, Atsumu is always calls out to Kageyama and approaches him, and he seems really intent on playing against Kageyama at Nationals.  We only got a little tiny snippet of what his (and possibly Inarizaki’s) dance style might be, and it was very Ballroom Jive style.  But it was such a small bit during his introduction that I’m not confident that’ll be locked in.  But I used to dance Jive and I’d recognize that footwork anywhere.  Atsumu is charming and outgoing, even when people don’t necessarily want to talk to him lol.  So for example, he does still talk to Sakusa and tries to engage with him, but Sakusa seems to hate Atsumu in particular lolol. 

I really enjoyed Toshi’s Sakusa.  I wrote about him a little bit more in my second review post that had some additional musings, (x) but to add to that, he really is sooooo painfully awkward.  For example, at Spring High, he sees Kageyama and Atsumu, and he calls out to Kageyama.  

“Kageyama!” he shouts from across the stage, then he walks up to him, staaaares him down in silence, slooooowly straightens his posture, and then just goes, “Later,” 「ん、じゃ」 and starts to leave!!  And Atsumu stops him going, “What did you even come here for?!” 

Sakusa was a little hostile at first when asking Kageyama how on earth his team could’ve beaten Ushijima (he calls him Wakatoshi-kun), but I think he comes to accept Kageyama’s skills by the end of their time together, as evidenced by the fact that Kageyama is kind of the only person he’s willing to call out to even if only to issue a challenge.  Since he doesn’t like Atsumu and doesn’t really talk to Hoshiumi either.  

They really center the three of them around Kageyama.  Atsumu clearly wants a setter show-down, Hoshiumi clearly wants to elicit that shock and surprise out of Kageyama (who’s used to short players), and Sakusa clearly wants to beat the team that beat Wakatoshi.

1. Did you like DW as a child? i didn’t see any until i was 12, and only really got into it about a year later. i didn’t grow up in the uk and we couldn’t get doctor who where we lived, so that’s one of the only reasons i wished i had always lived here  

18. Best Doctor monologue? ooooh. the one that stuck with me the most was the one from The Waters of Mars. ‘time lord victorious’ and all that. i love that episode & seeing the darker side of him was very interesting - love some conflicted morals in my protagonists!! idk if it was the one i enjoyed the most, but the whole episode was so surreal and creepy that it’s the one i remember the clearest. 

33. Which episodes do you skip? :| i'm so sorry i skipped a few 12 episodes with clara, based on reviews from my friend, because i wanted to catch up to get to bill. and also.. clara isn’t my favourite. but i love 12 so i should go back and watch them at some point. also that one 11 christmas special with the trees that got very boring. other than those, none!

Favourite book to get lost in: i haven’t gotten lost in a book in a long time so my memory is basically wiped. 

Favourite chill out tv show: i’m rarely chill when i watch anything. watching tv/movies is just not a chill activity for me it requires so much focus sdjfksdf

Best advice you’ve ever heard: as much as i hate to pull something out of anime for this lmao the only thing i can remember right now is the advice in bleach about not letting fear be the reason that you do what you do. e.g. when you decide to protect someone, don’t do it thinking “i’m afraid they’re going to get hurt”. do it thinking “i’m not going to let them get hurt”.

hey! actually, yuunosuke was in the baseball club! but his high school, higashi fukuoka, is a powerhouse school that did win both the interhigh and the spring tournament in yuu-kun's third year. (taniguchi from fc tokyo went to the same school and was on the team at that time!)

im feeling very. nohebi rn so! how did numai's pinch serve go? and how did numai and kuguri interact?

Since they do a very small scene for Nohebi versus Itachiyama, they do show us the scene where Numai injures his hand in that match.  After that, he is fairly noticeable (at least to me) cheering on the sidelines for his team.  Possibly because he’s VERY loud and intense lol.  

In usual Engeki fashion, Numai’s serve scenes are pretty emotionally intense, and they make it obvious how painful it is for him to be serving with his injury.  He’ll jump and serve, roar out as he does it, then as he lands on the ground, he’s immediately clutching his hand and groaning, so like... thanks for that. 

When he’s going in for his second serve and saying this line, he’s not keeping as calm as in these panels.  His team is gathered around him, and he’s screaming about the pain, but also screaming that it’s ONLY pain and obviously he’ll keep going if he needs to help them win.  

And then once his serve is returned and he needs to be rotated out, the manga has this:

But in the play, he goes directly to Daishou center-stage and puts his arm on his shoulder and says it’s up to them now.  The one time that he tweeted this photo of him and Yuu?  That’s how they are in the play as he’s leaving the court.  So have fun with those feels.  

Numai and Kuguri’s big moment is after Nohebi loses the match, and Kuguri’s crying because they lost.  During the final show, Yuuta was definitely crying for real (as was Yuu) about their loss, so it was extra emotional.  Numai puts both hands on Kuguri’s shoulders as he’s bowing and then he encourages him about his skills and saying how relieved he is to see Kuguri getting really upset.  His voice was cracking, so I think Minagi might have been crying for real too (which he hadn’t during the earlier shows), but he didn’t break completely.  

Honestly, Kuguri was super cute and it was clear how much both Daishou and Numai wanted to push him forward and encourage him to break out of his shell a little.  Both Daishou and Numai would do a lot with little gestures throughout the play: calling out his name, offering him a high five that would take him by surprise, patting his head, that kind of thing.  They’re not overly nice or anything, that’s not their way, but they’re definitely playing the role of senpai.

After three months of seeing your reblog tags go nonstop over Yuu and Nohebi, I was thrilled to find this in my inbox honestly.

First off, he’s way too cool and charming for my liking, he was NOT supposed to win me over, OK??? 

He’s mostly with his team so a solo introduction is put off until the second act basically, and he’s just very... sly.  His movements are all so fluid and he almost never stands up completely straight.  He’s got his head cocked sideways, he’s got one knee bent, shoulders lopsided, casually strutting almost constantly.  

But there’s a weirdly cute side too?  When Kuroo taunts that he heard how Mika dumped him, he loses face in front of his team a little.  One of them takes that as his chance with Mika and cheers.  Daishou then puts his arm around Kuroo’s neck and pulls him in close to whisper, “Where did you hear that from anyway?!?!”  This moment isn’t done super before their match though, it’s done almost immediately before they line up for opening bows, so the timing of it made it feel like they were a little less familiar with each other, but then they sort of made up for it by softening how they spoke to each other?  They’re not overly pulling faces and yelling at each other like what you see in the manga panels, it’s snide and snarky and can be read as more than just simple animosity.  I mean, I tease some of my friends like the way they do.

And there was the nice bit after the match where a team that Nohebi beat is running their mouth about them and how much they cheat and suck up to the referees and all that.  And Kuroo goes out of his way to go and point out to them Nohebi’s actual strategies and what techniques they’re good at.  The way Kuroo does it though, is very Nohebi-esque.  He taunts them pretty harshly about not noticing, which means they’d never have been able to win anyway, and Engeki frames it so that Daishou is on the far side of the stage listening in and watching Kuroo semi-defend his team.  And when Kuroo walks away from them, he catches Daishou’s eye across the stage and there was like... almost a thank-you moment, but Kuroo breaks the tension by doing snake hands, mimicking the Nohebi choreography, then running off stage.  Ultimately, it does feel like both of them respect the other’s abilities, even if they can’t be chummy.  

Then Mika enters the stage (it’s Kaede in a different wig and outfit) and there’s the little Daishou-Mika moment~ It’s enough to make his team jealous and yell at him and carry him up above their shoulders and haul him off stage that way lol. 

Once again, Engeki making me feel for characters I’d never have considered before and getting me involved when I DIDN’T MEAN TO GO HERE.
