Hand Painted, French Post Card from Tianjin, 1900
Interesting formation, in some ways reminiscent of late Ming formations. Also looks like it would be quite effective. Gunner in front kneeing, where he can safely fire but be protected if rushed. Spearmen can easily advance to front to engage an enemy. Soldier with armed with Pudao to cut down anyone attempting to push in past spearmen. I imagine the Frenchman who painted this has seen this, or a very similar formation, in person.
