Many Boliyan sung by the women in our group are lively - they clap along enthusiastically, adding to the energy of the rhythm kept by the Dholaki. But sometimes the meaning of the songs is bittersweet. Today the women sang about their daughters in the Boli Sada Chirian Da Chamba Ve - how wonderful they are, but ultimately they have to say goodbye to them when they marry and go to live with the husband's family. In the song they liken their daughters to a beautiful bird (chirian) who flies away, leaving an emptiness behind...
