“Swarna Chitrakar depicts here the Asian tsunami of 2004, presenting it not only as the scene of a natural disaster, but mythologizing it by portraying the wrath of Goddess Kali, unleashed on the oceans. There are several elements that deal with the ‘real’: At the upper right, those who are safe on land help others who are drowning. Several Tsunami victims, even some corpses and bobbing heads can be seen. Chitrakars’ scroll often depict national and international events of significance, yet the roots of the tradition mean that they also mythologize what they depict; in this instance, goddess Kali’s dark-hued skin, the suggestion of a third eye, the protruding teeth and the snakes filling the border portray her in her most demonic form.”
