Die With a Smile - Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars
If the world was ending I'd wanna be next to you If the party was over And our time on Earth was through I'd wanna hold you just for a while And die with a smile If the world was ending I'd wanna be next to you
Jackie woke up in the dead of night, breathing heavily with a thin layer of sweat covering her body. She had been jolted from her sleep and, in turn, the nightmare that left her feeling like she’d run a marathon. It was of her and Jan – who she was in, for lack of a better term, a ‘situationship’ with being forcibly ripped from each other and marched towards certain death. She didn’t know what it meant, but she was sure it meant something.
After sleeping it off for the rest of the night, she woke up reinvigorated. She understood now, or at least, she had drawn her own conclusions. It was simple as far as she was concerned; she had been ignoring her feelings for Jan for far too long. Admittedly, she had fallen in love with her sometime around the one-month mark. But she couldn’t get a read on whether or not the feelings were reciprocated, so she said nothing.
“Hey, d’you wanna come over?” Jackie asked with the phone pressed between her ear and shoulder. She chuckled softly and shook her head. “Not a euphemism, babe. I just… I wanted to see you… Of course I remember how you like your eggs, silly… Great, see you soon.”
By the time she heard a knock at the door, Jackie had just finished plating their meal. “Hey,” she greeted warmly as she let her in, giving her a hug before leading her to sit at the table. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“Nah, Chester gets me up early whether I like it or not… my god, I could never have children,” Jan laughed and shook her head. “What’s going on with you, though? I don’t think you’ve ever called me before noon.”
She cleared her throat as her gaze drifted down to her plate. She had thrown her focus into looking presentable and cooking, to the point where she hadn’t thought about how to articulate her revelation. “Well…” she took another bite to buy her some time. “Listen, Jan, you know what you mean to me, how much I care about you, right?”
Jan furrowed her brows, but nodded. They’d been friends before they started sleeping together, she already knew they cared for each other, that they enjoyed each other’s company. “Of course, why?”
“It’s so much more than that to me,” Jackie blurted out, then decided to just keep running with it. “I know we’ve been tiptoeing around labels and taking things slow, but I don’t wanna do this anymore. I just want to be with you. I… I’m in love with you, Jan.”
There was a moment of silence followed by the sound of a chair scraping across the wood floor. Then Jan was in Jackie’s lap, pressing kisses all over her face. “Oh, Jackie, I love you too.” The relief in her voice was palpable, both of them realizing how desperately they had needed to hear that from the other.
Jackie hugged her tightly, finally catching her in a proper kiss. “You have no idea how happy I am to hear that. I could die tomorrow and it’d be with a smile.”
