❁ ❁  “  If that was a joke, then it wasn’t funny.  ” He was getting quite snarky with her, wasn’t he? Perhaps he found it too comfortable to be around her (which, admittedly, she didn’t mind unless it brought an attitude like this to the table). But she noticed his half opened eyes gazing back at her, fighting back whatever sleep he could just to stay a little longer.

Stuborn little thing, wasn’t he?

“  I think it’s time for you to go, m’ijo. Any longer & you’ll become one of us.  ” Taking out a marigold petal from her apron pocket, she brought it close to the younger. She stopped momentarily, however, to give a good look at him. “  Ay, I just noticed you got taller. By next year, you’ll be just as tall as your Papá Héctor.  ”

A nod to allowing him to come back next year if he wanted to.

“  Bueno, until then, make sure to eat all your food & listen to your familia. Especially to your mamá & abuela---they already go through so much. & finally, don’t cause any trouble. I’ll be sure to hear about this from Pepita.  ” She smirked, knowing the latter was a difficult promise to keep.

❁ ❁  “  Miguel, that isn’t the point here.  ” He was completely missing the point here, he didn’t understand where she was coming from. Between the iron gate, she watched him distance himself further away from her, running away from the past as much as possible. He wanted to be a musician---he wanted to be just like him. It all started with that cursed guitar, & she just wished he could understand where she was coming from.

It wasn’t the music that was the problem, it was the emotion attached to it---the memories in which she could never quite say goodbye too.

But he wouldn’t understand, would he? Even if she tried to explain to him, even if she tried her best to tell him why it hurt her---he wasn’t going to listen.

Hands clasped around the metallic bars, she leaned into it. Of course she wanted him to be happy---she wanted to give her family (living and afterlife) everything. Alas, she couldn’t also take the another chance. She was too afraid to lose another.

With a defeated look, she let out a sigh & stared down at the uneven cobblestone stairs before her.

“  I’m trying to protect you.  ”

❁ ❁  “  Miguel.  ” She could tell when he wasn’t listening, & frankly, she didn’t appreciate it. But, boys will be boys, especially boys around that age. Sometimes, it didn’t hurt to listen a little, though.

“  As I was saying,  ” she started off, “  he did cross over the bridge. Now, if you were listening, you would also know that he left early to look for you. Pero you’re here now, so I’m going to have to find him.  ” Nothing ever went smoothly in the Rivera household apparently, & unfortunately for her, she had to deal with it in the afterlife as well. Was this her fate now?

Beckoning a hand at the younger, she let out a sigh & crossed over, arms folded behind her back. “  A ver, since I answered your question, I want to know why you’re here again.  ” She was grateful to have found him in a crowd this time, but that didn’t change the way she felt about it.

“  ¿What did you take this time? Don’t tell me it’s my foto again.  ”
