2004: Rival ethnic Koreans in Japan reconcile

Ethnic Koreans from pro-communist and anti-communist groups in Japan gathered in Seoul Monday to seek to break their decades-long Cold War hostility.

At the meeting, some 1,000 ethnic Koreans from the two rival organizations based in Japan vowed to seek cooperation and reconciliation with each other as part of efforts to achieve peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula.

The meeting was attended by some 500 representatives each from the pro-Seoul Korean Residents Union in Japan, or Mindan, and from the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, known as Chongryon.

The meeting was organized by the Interreligious and International Peace Council established by Rev. Sun-Myung Moon of the Unification Church, the founder of News World Communications Inc., which owns United Press International.

"We hope this meeting will help ease conflicts between the two ethnic Korean organizations in Japan and promote peaceful unification of the peninsula," IIPC Chairman, Chung-Hwan Kwak, said in a speech at the meeting.

A Tokyo court ruled that a Japanese property developer can buy the land and building that served as North Korea's de facto embassy in Japan. The Tokyo District Court decision on March 24 means that the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, or Chongryon, will almost certainly be forced to vacate the site in the capital’s Chiyoda Ward. The Chongryon building had embassy functions because formal diplomatic relations do not exist between Japan and North Korea. “The loss of the headquarters building symbolizes the decline of the association both nominally and in real terms,” said 77-year-old Kim Chan Jung, a nonfiction writer who has written a book about Chongryon. “The association can no longer protest in an organized manner against hate speech (directed at ethnic Koreans) and the exclusion of North Korean schools from eligibility for programs that provide free high school tuition. Vice-Chairman of the Central Standing Committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) Pae Ik Ju on March 22 released a statement titled “All Koreans in Japan will turn out in just and patriotic war for reunification”.

The statement said the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of Korea on March 17 made public an “appeal to all Koreans” in which it called on all the Koreans in the north and the south and abroad to resolutely foil the war moves of the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean warmongers and turn out in a just and patriotic war for defending the destiny of the nation irrespective of differing ideology, ism, class, stratum, sex and age.

The appeal was a timely and just patriotic initiative that aroused all the Koreans to the nationwide struggle to defend the dignity and sovereignty of the nation and achieve the peace and reunification of the country under the prevailing grave situation reminiscent of the eve of a war, it noted.

The U.S. and its followers desperately tried to encroach on the sovereignty of the DPRK and the nation’s right to existence over the successful launch of Kwangmyongsong 3-2 and the third nuclear test that demonstrated the nation’s wisdom and resourcefulness all over the world, the statement said. It stressed that these nefarious acts are an intolerable insult and a hideous challenge to all the Koreans.

All facts prove that the U.S. imperialists are the sworn enemy of the Korean nation and the on-going all-out actions for defending the dignity and sovereignty of the nation is a showdown between the Korean nation and the U.S.

Chongryon and the Koreans in Japan will turn out in a courageous patriotic action to foil the U.S. and south Korean warlike group’s reckless confrontation and war moves, defend the sovereignty and dignity of the nation and achieve national reunification.

The U.S. and the south Korean puppet warmongers should immediately stop confrontation and war moves, clearly understanding that the reckless nuclear war provocation racket will precipitate their destruction.

The Voice of Korea has posted a video clip of scenes from a memorial service Saturday in Pyongyang for So Man Sul, the head of Chongryon, the association of ethnic Koreans in Japan who align themselves with North Korea.
