Seoul day 3: Strolling along Chongyecheon (淸溪川) stream
we had to drop by Dongdaemun a second time to fill in our tax rebate forms at Doota mall, because the first night we were there, we didn't realize the tax counter closed at midnight while we shopped our hearts out past 4 am.
also we read about a pretty famous chicken soup restaurant in Dongdaemun, and so en route to dinner and Doota, we had a quick stroll by the Chongyecheon stream!
apparently this stream was a $280 million project initiated by the mayor. it used to be a highway, but this project meant to introduce more greenery and nature to the city. in some sense, it does remind me of Central Park in Manhattan and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. a peaceful hideout, right in the middle of a bustling city.
there were these fountains, which had frozen over in the Seoul winter. it does seem like a deliberate effort to get them to freeze though, as the patterns just looked too intricate to be accidental. the tips of the frozen fountains were still trickling water too.
Chongyecheon runs for 5.8km through downtown Seoul, and we would have loved to walk a longer part of it to see what else it had to offer along the way. sadly our itinerary was packed to the brim (i'll admit all the time got eaten up by shopping), and so we had to make our way out. hopefully some day i'll be back to see Chongyecheon in the daytime too!
