Choni//You’re Sensational
Ever since Cheryl could remember she wondered who would say the words tattooed onto her wrist. Who her soulmate would be. Cheryl was always told to keep it covered, that no such thing existed, that no one would be stupid enough to love her but she ignored what her mother said, or at least she tried to. She instead would talk to Jason about it. About what his tattoo said. What the most important quote about his relationship was. Even though they were told not to speak about them they would spend endless nights in the same bed together taking about it, about how they both had them in the same place, on their right arm and about how they couldn’t wait to meet their soulmate and hear them say the few words that meant the most to their relationships. How they would prove their parents wrong, especially their mother.
For a while Cheryl thought that it was going to be Heather. That one time when they were hanging out, like they always did she would say those two magic words and everything would be alright in the world. That her days would become lighter and so would her life. And one night she was so close, or she thought she was. They were both in the same bed, facing each other like they always did and talking about what their life was going to be like in the future, when Cheryl got away from her mother and away from Riverdale. “Cheryl, you’re” She was interrupted by her mother storming in and pulling Cheryl out of the bed and away from the girl she loved and who loved her back. As she sat on the bed while her mother shouted at her and she watched Heather leave, her mother also furious she traced the two words over and over again as silent tears fell down her face, like she always did when her mother said the awful but normal things to her. She thought that the one chance to be loved and to prove her mother wrong were gone, so when she went to bed that night, after her mother had ‘taught her a lesson’ in the only violent way she knew how to, she traced the words quickly and wished that she would be loved and that it wasn’t over. That all hope hadn’t been lost.
Years later Jason had come into her room one night and told her all about the girl he had met, and how she said their important quote ‘I will love you until the day you die, and then forever more’. He had laughed at how weird a saying that was and Cheryl had laughed with him, agreeing that it was strange. He then hugged her and told her that everything was going to be okay, like he always did, this time was one of the last and the only one that Cheryl could remember. She had blocked out that last couple of nights before Jason left as it was too painful to remember how worried but excited he was to be leaving Riverdale. To be leaving her. But also seeing how happy he was and how much hope was in his eyes. He then told her all about his plan and she agreed to help. Even if she couldn’t get away from their cursed family she would do anything to get him away. When he had gone to bed she wished that he would be safe and far away from their parents, but maybe she wished too hard she thought when Jason was found dead.
After that she felt more alone than she ever had. She also felt more and more broken and full of spite. That wasn’t helped by her mothers daily reminder that she was loveless and deviant. However now when she would say these things she wouldn’t trace the words, she just left them covered. Nobody was going to say those words to her so what would be the point in showing them. Like her mother told her the only thing about love she knew was to rip it apart.
But then that changed, when the schools merged and the serpents roamed the halls of Riverdale High. It wasn’t instant but she could sense a change in the air. And then she started to notice a girl, a girl with pink hair and a serpent tattoo. The girl she had called ‘queen of the buskers’. She had thought that was a great nickname but as the weeks wore on and her mothers insults got worse she started to call her by her name. Toni Topaz. And even the thought of her made Cheryl smile again. A real smile that hadn’t been seen since Jason had died, probably even before. She traced the two words on her again, silently defying her mother whenever she shouted and called her. Her hope growing slightly, even if her mother did try everything to destroy it.
And when Toni said those words. Those two words that she had waited to hear her entire life. The words that kept her going even when all hope was lost.
“You’re sensational”
