have a bit of keep close
She skimmed the file, the code lighting in her mind.
“You’re reviewing Initiate Clark’s incident?” She pulled it back by reflex.
The officer raised a brow. “I am.”
She should keep her mouth shut, hand over the file and keep her head down. But she couldn’t. A burst of adrenaline spread through her like a firecracker- hiss and crack.
“May I make a suggestion, sir?”
“You’re… Wallace. Handled the investigation with Paladin Danse.” He studied her face for a moment. “I’ll hear it.”
“I think a full psychiatric evaluation is required, sir. Clarke wasn’t in his right mind at the time of the incident.” The words lined up like a reflex, a steady, self-assured cadence leaving her mouth. “Clearing the base broke him. His cohort will corroborate my observation.”
Once the words were spoken she let the folder fall into the man’s outstretched hand. He considered her words, a slight smile tugging at his lips.
“I recall their statements from your report.” He tapped the folder against his other palm, giving her a nod. “I’ll keep it in mind, Knight.”
“That’s all I ask. Thank you, sir.”
The officer excused himself and she bit back an anxious sigh, returning her gaze to the other folders on the shelf. She was almost dizzy from the excitement, her fingers trembling over one of the spines.
“Good work, counselor.” A dulcet voice hummed near her ear, warm breath ghosting the back of her neck.
She gave a start, turning to the unmistakable owner of the voice with a glare. She hissed an exhale through her teeth before turning back resentfully.
“You should wear a bell when you’re out of your power armor.” Her words came out clipped, nerve endings still stinging from the surprise.
Danse chuckled, quiet and low in his chest. “I meant it. You argued your case well.”
A warmth bloomed in her stomach, but she tried to ignore it, reminding herself that he was the reason she was trapped in that dusty archive reorganizing reports in the first place.
“I’m proud of you.” He insisted, no doubt noticing her stiff movements.
A small smile broke free with the continued praise. She tried to twist it back into annoyance. “Did you come here just to flirt or did I get myself in even more trouble?”
“No trouble.“ His voice turned gruff, pretending not to have heard the first part. Though he didn’t deny it, to her surprise. “Just checking in.”
“Not like I’m going anywhere.” She grumbled, shuffling a few folders that had gotten out of order. “Can’t cause problems in this cage.”
“You’ve been here 10 hours and you’re already trying to influence a superior officer’s investigation.” He chided, leaning a shoulder against the metal wall. “Lucky I didn’t catch it on tape.”
“Massachusetts is a two party consent state. Even if you did, it isn’t admissible in court.” She shot back in mock seriousness.
Danse only smiled. Her heart skipped into her throat, her gaze struggling between the easy curve of his mouth and the dangerously tender look in his eyes.
She didn’t know he could look at someone like that, let alone her.
