A gentle smile lights his face as she traces one of his many scars that adorn his chest. A lifetime of battle hasn’t left him unmarred. “Took a musketball at Île de Ré, 1622. One of many injuries I have sustained over my years as a musketeer and soldier in the infantry.” It’s one of the older injuries. Nowadays women are drawn to the various cuts and bruises from small battles and the scars from the torture he’s sustained from missions gone wrong. Not the older ones.

     ‘ Are you certain of that? ’ Delirious he may be, but Robin is still keenly aware of the way his head is ringing and how his leg throbs so painfully. He curls his fingers into John’s tunic and tries to drag himself up properly, only for the whole world to tilt sideways the moment he sits up and his back to put up a fight regardless. He flops back onto the grass, head spinning, and closes his eyes to save himself the disorientation. Still, he manages something of a grin -- though, it edges towards a grimace: ‘ Father, I am perfectly well -- ’

Their horses walk a measured place as they traverse the lonely road back to Paris from delivering letters to a Comte in the East of France. A relatively easy mission for two experienced Musketeers but it gives them the time to relax. “So, what do you want to do once we return to Paris? I do believe Treville has given us the rest of the day to do as we wish. We could train, we could relax, we could head to the Wren...There are so many options for us to explore. We could also take our time on the way back and you can win us some free drinks at the closest inn?”

It’s always fun to be with his best friend. They work so well together and Aramis has found a true brother in the man.

“Constance? Are you alright?” He can see the tell-tale tear tracks that have worked their way down her face. Despite her clear attraction to their young Gascon Aramis cannot simply overlook a beautiful woman whose in some kind of distress. “I might not be your favourite Musketeer but I can offer an ear to your troubles and some wine to share between friends. Or, I can hunt down whoever has caused such sadness and threaten them with a pistol shot or two. Either option is acceptable.”

Since meeting the young woman he has sensed an unhappiness in her. Something that brings out the protective nature that he gives to anyone he trusts. She has been helpful to them a lot and it’s only right that he help her now as best he can.

It’s been a long time since he’s been down to the crypt but considering the date he finds it most appropriate. Adele might have been a love long lost to him but that doesn’t mean the grief isn’t any less prevalent inside him. Even now, years later, standing as the first minister he feels it. Another woman who had lost her life because of him. It is what keeps him so close to Anne. So protective of her and their son. For he would not fail again in his duty to protect those he loves from the dangers of the world.

He hears her footsteps and feels the warmth of love settle over the grief he feels. Anne has always keep watch on his emotions and he is not surprised she has followed him. “I am sorry if I have worried you. I know I have been quiet during today’s meetings.”

that cannot possibly be true and he wouldn’t hold her to it, she is a queen and a mother and she has the weight of a country on her shoulders. “any moment you think of me is a moment of joy, i would not ask for more than what you willingly give.” that sounds trite, foolish, the kind of things a womanizer whispers to women before he leaves their beds and forgets them.

but that’s not aramis, never has been, especially not with anne.

he’s as close to her as he can be without it looking suspicious, old friends and confidants, nothing more. and as long as they keep their voices down that should be enough. it has to be, because he is unwilling to take a step back. “unless you’re teasing me, in which case, i must say that you are terribly cruel.” he laughs then, just a short one, but it’s realer than anything he says to the ministers and the courtiers by a mile.

what was he supposed to say in the face of such hope? such tenderness, the kind that worked its way inside his chest and made his heart skip a beat, made it hard for him to breathe for just a moment. he was the one that believed in the goodness of god, in the hope of a better future, but when it came to her? his queen? it was sometimes impossible for him to see a way forward for them that ended happily.

but, god, he had to believe when she said things like that.

reaching out, he brushed hair from her eyes with a gentle smile. “we will, in this life or the next, i look at you and i see the truth of that.”

the scars all over him, many of them stitched up by aramis, seems to show how little truth there is in that statement. “friend, i suspect god has been itching to get his hands on you for years now. it is simply may wonderful needlework that has managed to keep him at bay. “ at that a wide, beaming smile breaks out on his face. 

“so, if you think about it, i’m your guardian angel.”
