Choripanada and Bellavista
04 August, 2012
I'm sick. It sucks, I never get sick and one week after I make it to Chile I have a sore, hoarse throat, runny nose and am super congested. I haven't had a cold this bad in a really long time. At home in the winter I don't spend much time outside since we drive everywhere and I'm not going sightseeing or anything. However, here I spend all day/night outside for the most part and it seems to have gotten to me, probably also combined with the super smokey bars we've been visiting.
So since I did nothing of importance today, I'll tell you about last night.
The Choripanada was kind of odd...it's basically like a strange hot dog but smaller and stumpier (yes I know, that's what she, but I can't describe it another way). I headed there with Jessica and French girl number 2 and we met Danny outside the metro. Poor Danny had to wait for us about a half an hour and was getting hit on by strange women. We ran into Adrienne's group of friends, which they were pretty lucky to have run into us because they almost got on the wrong metro because they didn't know it was express during rush hour. How they've been here for a month and managed to always get on the right train by luck baffles me, because I definitely found out the hard way, and I found out quickly. Danny, Jessica and I somehow pulled away from the group and we lost French girl number 2; which we forgot about until hours later we were in Barrio Bellavista...oops! So Kelsey and Adrienne met up with us, after I gave them pretty poor directions and they wandered too far from where we were. Seriously, there should be something that prohibits me from giving directions unless I'm reading them to you straight from google maps. Anyway, so at this Choripanada they made us wear name tags with our name and country on them. Seriously? That's pretty much 90% of what our conversations with others here consist of so we found ourselves at a loss of things to talk about with others. There was also the option of getting your face painted...what? Inside, there was a type of club setting and people actually did a conga line to some random song! We skedaddled pretty quick, it all had a very 5th grade kind of vibe---name tag, face paint, conga line, hot dogs...kind of like field day at school.
Jessica, Danny, Kelsey and I made our way to Bellavista where we met up with a friend of Danny's named Teresa, and got drinks at a bar called La Cueva, and it very much resembled a little bat cave. It's actually pretty unsettling how creepy all the places we visit here are. Anyway, we went in because they had 2 for 1 drinks...and it was obviously blatant why, they cost about 8 dollars each! We did rather enjoy the music videos they played at the bar. They pretty much consist of really bad editing and they all look like they're filmed in someone's backyard with a bunch of clothes they found at goodwill, but they splurged on the sombreros.
We then went to meet up with Adrienne and her California crew (as I've decided to refer to them for the purposes of this blog), but they had a table outside and I don't know how they managed it because it was entirely too cold outside. So Danny, Jessica, Teresa and I made our way to a bar called Fresia where we made absolute fools of ourselves. Kelsey ended up joining us there after the California crew went home or dispersed to other places. We insisted on taking pictures with EVERYONE that was present at the bar, which was not many people since by this time it was 4 in the morning. Someone had the great idea to wait for the metro...which doesn't open until 6:30 on Saturdays so it was a really dumb idea turns out. Anyway, we asked to borrow a hat from the wall for our pictures and I swear to you the owner told us to keep it as a gift, but apparently not because everyone thinks I stole it. But seriously I walked out with it on my head and it's freaking neon orange, they could have asked for it back if they wanted it. After all was said and done, we ended up taking cabs home. All of the wine we've been drinking is from 2010 and we can't figure out why, but literally every bottle we've gotten has been. And clearly this drinking has NOTHING to do with my cold. I hope to recover by the time classes start, which is a week ago, but what I really mean is by the time I start attending classes on Monday.
Our water at home is apparently leaking into the downstairs apartment, so until it gets fixed I can only take 5 minutes showers because we have to turn the hot water off....yay me!
Adios!
