Chorizema ‘Bush Flame’

This new-to-me plant caught my eye on my weekly visit to the nursery. Lovely, striking colors made even more beautiful by the raindrops.

#3597 - Chorizema rhombeum - Scarlet Flame Pea 

'rhombeum' refers to the diamond-shaped leaves, although they can also be egg-shaped. And the flowers may also be orange, pink, or yellow.

Yet another SW endemic. It is a prostrate to ascending or twining shrub found on gentle slopes, river banks and on exposed coastal sites from Perth to the Esperance Plains.

#3596 - Chorizema cordatum - Heart-leaf Flame Pea

Apparently I haven't written up the previous Flame Peas I've seen - might as well rectify that now.

Described in 1838 by John Lindley from seed collected in the Swan River Colony. The specific epithet (caudatum) means "heart-shaped.

Probably a cultivar - the wild form often has leaves that are more spiky.

Widespread from the Geraldton Sandplains, down along the Escarpment, and around to Esperance, in forest, on rocky outcrops, along watercourses and on winter-wet flats. Easily cultivated from seed and cuttings, but prefers dry summers and no frost.
