My incomplete Luna fic bc I forgot what else to write but decided to post here anyways bc it was a bitch to write
(luna is very kewl and this au was inspired by an au on the cfvg playground discord server! come join us, if you liked this! or if you didn't, join u- [sounds of rapid bonking])
Luna sees things that she thinks that she shouldn't.
(Or, an obligatory Luna sees spirits, like the whole Chrono sees spirits thing that is Incredible because Luna and Chrono amirite)
-
Everything begins when Luna is three.
Or four. She isn't quite sure when they had exactly appeared, but she thinks that it was around that age.
Or maybe she had only begun to realize it in kindergarten, when the funnily dressed people weren't being seen by the adults.
"Mama," she said one day, pointing to the oddly dressed man in the pickup corner, peering over a big kid playing with another big kid. "Why's that man dressed like that?"
Her mother looked over, stared straight at the man who was covered in weird metals, and had concernedly asked, "Who?"
"Mama, he's right over there." She pulled on her mother's hand. "Can't you see him?"
Her mother had looked down at her, worry evident in her eyes. "Luna, dear. What do you mean?"
And she had gazed into her mother's eyes and realised that Mama didn't see what she was seeing. And if Mama didn't see, that meant the adults couldn't see.
"Never mind. It's nothing." She shook her head.
(Of course, later on, her mother had taken her to see a psychologist. Luna took care to not mention the people with weird clothes.)
-
When Luna is in high school, the streets are packed with those oddly dressed people. It wasn't like they had disappeared when she was little, more like they had slowly but surely increased in numbers during her childhood, as well as the addition of insects and animals as big as children that no one except herself could see.
More and more of them appeared, each of them following a single person. She thinks she saw a walking tomato with sunglasses, once.
It didn't strike her as weird, (she had grown used to the sight, after all) until she woke up one day and thought, 'Oh.' when she looked out her window and the pavements were full of knights, animals and vegetables.
That had been a weird day, especially when she saw dozens of dragons as big as skyscrapers filling the sky.
But none of the oddly dressed people gave so much as a glance towards her.
Well, until Luna nearly bumped into a woman dressed like a noble in the Feudal Era.
"Ah, I'm sorry!" She hurriedly apologized, and rushed off to the gates of her school because her alarm thought it would be a great time to not work, didn't it-?
The woman openly gaped at her retreating back(not that she could see it), before realising that the person she was trailing was being absorbed into the sea of faces.
Luna hadn't put that much thought into that incident, (mostly because she was scolded by Mr Kaze for being late even though she had made it into the school a second before the bell rang) but when she was on her way home, the weirdly dressed people were staring at her and whispering amongst themselves.
-
She is accepted by an organisation called 'The Association' after sending in her application, to be part of their new idol group. Of course, she didn't think that her application would have even made it into the finals, not when there were so many more talented people who had signed up. But the day that her phone pings with a new message for her, her mom takes one look at her and immediately whisks her into the car (Naturally, after Luna had shown her the acceptance message).
And oh, how many dragons that held mighty swords, how many bees and maidens who wore flowers in every part of their clothes, and dozens more oddities that she thinks that she isn't supposed to see, all present at the event where many people had been accepted to become a Vanguard idol, whatever that was.
It's a miracle that she doesn't fall flat on her face when she performs for the judges, and she's certain that she had missed certain beats that were important, but her name is called up when it's all over, signifying that she has been selected for this.
She has been selected.
-
Her idol partner is called Am. She is experienced, capable and she has a fierce pirate lady behind her, watching Luna's every move. It is terrifying, sometimes, whenever Luna looks over and she accidentally looks at the pirate lady and she scowls at Luna like she can't see her.
But Luna learns to live with it, as she does with the oddities from her childhood.
She does keep messing up whenever the pirate lady looks her way, which is not ideal especially if she wants to keep up with Am and to be more than just an idol partner to her.
She wants Am to be her friend, but it's hard to get to know her when Am only views her as a work partner.
And perhaps that's why Luna curiously flips through Am's cards when she left to take a phone call.
The fierce pirate lady is called Nightrose, she learns, and the cards are from a game known as Vanguard. (She has heard of it before, but never really had the desire to get invested into it.)
"Am," She asks the day after she discovers the cards, when Am lectures her about the importance of being a Vanguard idol. "How do I play Vanguard?"
Am pauses in her tirade. "How do you-? Luna, have you never played Vanguard?"
"Well.." She sheepishly rubs the back of her neck, and that's all the confirmation that Am needs.
She rushes out of the room, and for a second, Luna fears that Am has requested for a change in partners when she doesn't return. Until she does, holding another deck of cards in her hands.
"I'll teach you the basics." Am says, handing her the deck.
Masked Magician, Harri looks up at her, and she instantly feels a sense of warmth radiating through her entire body.
Am crushes her completely, when they have a practice match, but that warmth does not fade.
Harri's card grins at her, dappled in the warm colours of the sunset as she walks back home, and Luna smiles back.
-
"Luna? What's wrong?" Am asks when she stares at Nightrose when she isn't looking for a bit too long.
She startles. "Oh- I- Nothing in particular."
Am looks at her rather concernedly, but does not press.
Her partner(friend) does not see, but that's alright, though Luna wishes that there was someone else who could see, just like her.
-
She goes to Card Capital 2 to search for a teacher who can make her strong, strong enough to play on equal grounds with Am, and meets Chrono Shindou.
Her eyes accidentally flicker to Shion and Tokoha's units during their fight, and her eyes bug out. The green haired swordsman is glaring daggers at the plant lady, while the plant lady smiles oh-so-sweetly at him and does a rather rude gesture.
Chrono follows her line of sight, before sighing.
"Tokoha, can you please ask Ahsha to not give the middle finger to Altmile?"
The plant lady who she's assuming is Ahsha visibly pouts, but retracts the rude gesture once Tokoha levels a disappointed stare in her general direction.
Altmile's facial features do not change, but there's a slight aura of smugness that radiates from him.
"Sorry about that, they just tend to get a bit much-"
Chrono's eyes suddenly widened. "Wait, you can see them too?"
See them too.
Chrono can see, just like her.
But then she suddenly notices the time, and she's late, late to Am-
She doesn't notice that she accidentally leaves Harri behind.
-
After that, she meets Ibuki Kouji, when Am leaves for another phone call and she stumbles into him.
He's tall and has an aura of intimidation, even though he does not scowl at her and he offers an apology.
An apology. To her. Even though she was the one to bump into him.
Ibuki-san is helping their staff, which is why he's here, he explains to her, but her eyes often stray to the massive unit towering over him.
The unit behind him is very huge(and that doesn't even begin to describe its sleek features, all pointed edges and crystals), easily taking up the space provided by the already high ceiling, though she has a feeling that it isn't even a fraction of their true height.
They emanate a cooing sound, and Luna feels her hair ruffle from the force of it.
They easily dwarf the tallest unit that she had ever seen, and she isn't even sure what this unit is. It does look somewhat like a dragon, but the dragons she's seen so far aren't that tall.
They are humming, and the full force of their song takes her breath away. It rejuvenates her, but it keeps her in place, her limbs feeling as though they were locked up.
The dragon coos towards Ibuki-san, not that he can hear or even see them. Ibuki-san leaves, and so does the dragon.
Am comes back from her phone call, cocking her head inquisitively when Luna is staring at where the dragon had been. Her mind is all messed up, but in a good way.
"Am," She says, finding her voice again. "What clan does Ibuki-san play?"
