Ran into Chris Ballinger at VidCon. I was walking out of the convention center to take a break and I saw a crowd of people in front of a booth and there was Chris Ballinger taking pics with fans. Of course I had to take a pic with him and ask him to sign my Subscribe case. I told him that @cookinggurl43 is a big fan and that she loves Parker bc he’s so funny. Chris said Parker is a really funny.
normal people: oh boy, tomorrow is Christmas! me: ahhhh Jacob is gonna get his drum set and Parker is getting his microphone ahhhhhhhhhh I love the ballinger kids
Haters Back Off reaction
I just finished watching Haters Back Off. Yeah, I know, I’m two months late to the party but I can’t sit still and watch TV to save my life so it’s a miracle I made it through at all. Especially because I don’t like Miranda. I love Colleen and the entire Ballinger clan to pieces, which is why I sort of forced myself to watch the show even though at first I honestly couldn’t stand it. Watching that level of dysfunction was heartbreaking. Terrifying. So so so upsetting. I felt bad for Emily and frustrated with Bethany and honestly just hated Miranda and Uncle Jim. But they grew on me. Episode 3 sold me, and I was eager to keep watching.
But then Bethany’s mom was diagnosed with kidney disease. Three months ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I already saw so much of my mom in Bethany -- in all the worst ways -- and the devastating diagnosis sent me over the edge. You see, my mom and I both have chronic depression. Bethany behaves, in many ways, just like my mom has at the height of her depression. In her worst years. And here I sat, watching this awful girl be so self-absorbed that she destroyed everyone around her when all I ever tried to do was save my mom from herself. My mom and I -- we both fell into very deep, very dark holes, and we both saved each other. But Miranda -- Miranda just axed everyone around her (I can’t even say everyone she loved. I can’t. I don’t know how much Miranda was capable of loving anyone other than herself) because she is incapable of seeing past the end of her own nose.
For years, I came home from school every day terrified of finding my mother’s dead body. I lived with the constant fear, for several years, that my mother was going to kill herself. It was by no means an unfounded fear. My family has been, as dysfunctional as Miranda’s. Proper treatment of both mine and my mother’s brain diseases has played a huge role in putting our lives back together. But Haters Back Off was, well, a perfect representation of what could very, very easily have happened to my family. And it sucked to watch.
All that being said -- Haters Back Off is brilliant. It’s weird. It’s very, very clever. Colleen and Chris are both very talented, very smart people and they created something entirely new and strange. It’s not a normal TV show. Colleen and Chris and the rest of the team should be very proud of themselves. Haters Back Off is an incredible accomplishment. It is not, however, funny.
