In 2016 or so me and the kid were in saginaw watching my favorite hipster play a show. Chris Bathgate opened for him and I was blown away - this guy was amazing and with a reverb machine was playing incredibly detailed and layered soulful songs.
Back home the next day nursing a hangover I googled and found he was a ‘big deal’ as a new artist, there was even a tiny desk concert.
He’s dropped a new album since then, it was delightful but don’t know if it found commercial success, and I follow his Instagram. This Instagram live track (that’s a thing? Okay) is Salt Year, my favorite of his songs. He plays it here like someone who’s been playing it for ten years, familiar with all of its parts and deconstructing to pull out the song’s guts and change the outer appearance.
