Song Review: Roadcase Royale - “Get Loud”
As Roadcase Royale’s premiere makes clear, it’s pretty much impossible to successfully package a protest song in the music of a hoped-for hit single.
“Get Loud” tries to do just that. And while pop fans might find something to like in the glossy, upbeat music, its attempt at serious messaging is stymied by the glossy, upbeat music.
And the stupid lyrics.
Featuring four members of Heart in guitarist Nancy Wilson, bassist Dan Rothchild, drummer Ben Smith and keyboardist Chris Joyner, plus guitarist Ryan Waters and singer Liv Warfield of Prince’s New Power Generation, Roadcase Royale recently released the single and said the band has four more songs in the can and plans to tour in 2017.
“(The band) is a side project and not a replacement for Heart,” Wilson said in the news release that announced the group’s formation.
“Get Loud” seeks to encourage people to speak out in city streets, crowded malls, high-school halls and bathroom stalls, before concluding:
It will get loud/it’s gonna get loud/it will get loud/we gotta get loud
While “Get Loud” may be catchy and innocuous enough to be a short-lived - and minor - hit, it has neither the grit nor the production nor the groove to appeal to fans of NPG or Heart’s rock ‘n’ roller/power-balladeer incarnations. And as far as protest songs go, this one is a dud.
