Owen Jones look at plans by the likes of Simon Franks, Chuka Umunna and Chris Leslie to attempt to forge a new centralist party. Jones highlights how such party would in the end only serve to hinder the Labour Party at the benefit of not just the Tories but the far-right elements of the Tories such as Jacob Rees-Mogg, particular relative to how a split would potential harm Labour’s gains in the last election over seats like Battersea.

Seven Labour MPs resign to form independent group
A group of Labour MPs have resigned from the party to form an independent group due to concerns with Brexit, Corybn’s leadership and antisemitism.
Those who are now independents are Chuka Umunna, Luciana Berger, Chris Leslie, Angela Smith, Mike Gapes, Gavin Shuker and Ann Coffey.
The seven MPs will sit in Parliament as the Independent Group.
