TBR Bingo @sublurbia - Hings
Genre: Short Stories, Humor
Year of Publication: 2017
Why was this book on your TBR?
I’ve chatted with the women who run 404 Ink before, and I’m excited about their project and what they stand for.
I hadn’t heard of Chris McQueer, whose short stories have been gaining attention on Medium and Twitter, until 404 Ink published his debut, Hings. His followers and people in my little network of bookish Scots were buzzin about it. It’s been described as “Clever, funny irreverent…[and] Scottish as fuck.” I had to check it out.
How long had it been on your TBR?
About a month. I’d seen it all over Twitter, so when I got to nip back up to Scotland for a weekend, I made sure to pick up a copy.
Was it everything you’d hoped?
Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. I loved a few of the stories and liked others well enough, but there were also a substantial number of misses. (Of course, some hits and some misses are to be expected with short stories.)
It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that I didn’t LOVE it as much as the rest of my community did. So far, its lowest rating on Goodreads is mine, and I didn’t even give it a bad rating. Which makes me feel like people are saying it’s amazing to jump on board the hype train more than anything else… I don’t know, I think the buzz raised my expectations too high and now I’m being a bit daft and bitter. It was still a fun read.
Rec it if you like writing in vernacular and are interested in contemporary, working class Scottish culture.
“Heid doon and just keep wheeling this smelly wee bastard along. Don’t stop. Nearly there. Right, I can see the bus stop. Aw fuck there’s somebody there. What if they can smell what’s in ma trolley? What if it’s somebody I know? This is gonnae be what kills me. No the angina, no a stroke, no even a bad fall. It’s gonnae be this - a deid bastarding lhasa fuckin apso.”
