Devenez co-propriétaire d'une chanson de Prince

Une mise aux enchères un peu spéciale est actuellement en cours sur eBay. Chris Moon, ancien gérant d’un studio d’enregistrement de Minneapolis, cède ses droits sur la chanson « Soft and Wet » de Prince au plus offrant. Les enchères ont démarré avec une mise à 490 000 dollars. Une démarche originale et accessible à tous, qui peut permettre aux plus grands fans de devenir co-propriétaire d’une chanson du Purple One

Depuis sa mort, Prince fait l’objet de nombreuses ventes aux enchères. Mais celle lancée par Chris Moon est unique en son genre. Ancien propriétaire d’un studio de Minneapolis, il avait enregistré les premières démos de Prince. Aujourd’hui, il met en vente ses crédits de co-auteur sur le single « Soft and Wet », sorti en 1978. Le prix d’entrée de l’enchère, qui se déroule entièrement sur eBay, est fixé à 490 000 dollars, soit environ 392 000 euros.

Chris Moon et Prince ont commencé à collaborer en 1976. A l’époque, le chanteur est encore étudiant à la Central High School et commence tout juste à tâter de la console. C’est dans le studio de Moon que Prince enregistre ses premières démos, notamment quelques chansons dont les paroles ont été écrites par le gérant du studio. « Soft and Wet » fait partie du lot. Le morceau sera utilisé en tant que single au moment de la sortie de For You, le premier album de Prince.

Quarante ans après la sortie officielle du titre, Chris Moon a donc décidé de céder ses droits : « J’aimerais que quelqu’un d’autre en profite autant que je l’ai fait. » Si la démarche qui consiste à revendre ses droits n’est pas originale dans le milieu, une telle vente aux enchères ouverte à tous intrigue. La co-propriété du copyright entraîne des revenus, tirés des ventes d’albums, du taux de streaming en ligne, des diffusions radio et des utilisations télévisuelles ou cinématographiques.

Seul un petit pourcentage des chansons de Prince sont co-créditées. Ce qui ne signifie pas pour autant que l’achat d’une part du copyright de « Soft and Wet » serait un bon investissement. Le titre avait rencontré un succès assez faible à sa sortie. Par ailleurs, le morceau fait partie de l’un des albums les moins vendus du chanteur. « Soft and Wet » a gagné en popularité après avoir été samplée par MC Hammer sur le titre « She’s Soft and Wet » mais ne dépassera jamais les succès mondiaux que connaîtra le Purple One quelques années plus tard.
