Blake Lalli called up from AAA Nashville

Lalli (pronounced Lolly, courtesy of Mike Vassallo) will take Chris Narveson's spot on the active roster and Corey Hart's spot on the 40 man roster. Corey Hart was transferred from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. This isn't good news. That means that Hart won't be eligible to return until May 30th instead of the early May as was hoped. The Brewers still refuse to call up Hunter Morris, probably not wanting to burn his service time by calling him up for a short stint. Lalli will serve as more of an emergency player in the case that a catcher gets hurt or the team needs a bat off the bench.

Brewers sign Kelvim Escobar and avoid arbitration with Chris Narveson

Because of injury, Escobar has only appeared in 1 MLB game since 2007. He has been pitching a bit in the Dominican Republic and Brewers Latin America scout Manny Batista has filed favorable reports and has said that he is touching mid-90's on the gun with his fastball. Ultimately it is a low risk move that could pay big dividends (ala Chris Capuano for the Dodgers). They signed him to a minor league deal for under $1 million. If he is able to make the team he provides a bit of a veteran presence on the pitching staff. With all of the young, unproven starters on this team it is nice to have a guy that has had some success, even if it was 5+ years ago. It isn't too often you can pick up a guy who has saved 38 games in one season and won 18 as a starter a few years later, especially for under a million.

The Brewers also avoided arbitration with lefty Chris Narveson. He is coming off of shoulder surgery and has been all but written out of the rotation.

Tidbits - In and around the dugout

The Timber Rattlers are the Midwest League Division Champs. Their championship series is this Wednesday. Go Rattlers! Mat Gamel was taking grounders yesterday at Miller Park. It is not yet known if he'll be playing in the upcoming Arizona fall league. Chris Narveson reports he is ahead of schedule in his arm injury recovery. He had surgery on his rotator cuff earlier this year. Reports say that he is throwing from 90 feet. If anyone is going to the Brewers game on Wednesday, September 12, there will be a special ceremony recognizing Chipper Jones and his retirement. It is rumored that Ryan Braun will be presenting him with some sort of award.

Chris Narveson is done for the season

After seeking a second opinion, Narveson will have surgery to repair the tear in his rotator cuff and will miss the remainder of 2012. Anytime you lose a starting pitcher for the season it isn't good news, but if the Brewers were to lose a guy it may as well be the #5 starter. It looks like the job as 5th starter is going to be Marco Estrada's for the near future. When Narveson went down (and Kameron Loe went on the bereavement list) both Mike McClendon and top prospect Wily Peralta were called up from AAA Nashville. Today Loe came back and Peralta was sent down. Hopefully Estrada continues his success as a starter. He was a solid fill-in last season and he had a great start against the Rockies even though he got the no-decision. As the season goes on he will be able to go deeper into games and control his own destiny a bit better. And if he were to falter Peralta and Michael Fiers will probably be the first guys to get a shot at the spot. Narveson will be back next season, barring a setback during rehab.

I'm starting to have regular conversations with Chris Narveson on Twitter. I tweeted yesterday saying, I hope that he keeps "Dr. Feelgood" as his at bat song because it's appropriate. He responded, at the end of the day, saying it was going to be a surprise and I'll find out on Opening Day, haha. Thanks, NarvDog.

I've got to say, so far, our starters look good. Even Marco Estrada was looking confident yesterday. Now, we need Shaun Marcum to get healthy, and work on our setup guys. This means you, Frankie de la Cruz.

Oh, and update:

Chris Narveson will start in tomorrow's Cubs v. Brewers game. It'll be interesting to see Dale Sveum in a Cubs jersey (gasp!). I wish the best of luck to him, despite the rivalry. Say hola to the Cubbies for me, Aramis. =P
