Today we celebrate the New Virgin Martyr Chryse (Zlata) of Bulgaria. Saint Chryse grew up a Christian and possessed a strong character and deep virtue. One day, a Turk was captured by her beauty and kidnapped her and took her to his house. He compelled her to convert to Islam so that he might make her his wife, but she adamantly refused. He threatened her with torture but this did not phase the holy one. The Turk then compelled her parents to convince her to convert, otherwise he would torture them all. Chryse's family begged the martyr to deny Christ and accept Islam for appearance's sake, however she rebuked them saying, “you who incite me to deny Christ are no longer my parents and sisters. Instead, I have the Lord Jesus Christ as my father, the Theotokos as my mother, and the saints as my brothers and sisters!” Seeing how steadfast the faith of the young martyr was, the Muslim authorities tortured her for three months, beating her with clubs, peeling strips of skin off her body, and passing a red hot skewer through her ears. Through the grace of God, Chryse remained steadfast in her faith. Enraged that they had been defeated by a woman, the Muslims tied her to a tree and cut her to pieces. In this way, she gave up her soul to the Lord in 1795. The Holy New Virgin Martyr Chryse received the double crown of virginity and martyrdom. With “Knives Out” premiering all over the world, and the dog café idea finally taking shape, it felt to Sophia like they had barely had time to spend together, which was why, the moment she found a free evening for them, she prepared everything for a night in - the fireplace was lit, there was wine, grapes and cheese on the couch table, and a blanket and lots of pillows on the floor for them to sit on. She had even found some marshmallows for them to roast on a stick, should they want to. Looking at her work, she smiled to herself, and stretched, climbing the stairs one last time to check on Lisa and CJ - both kids had been tired out so much by playing today they were in bed already, and fast asleep, as she peaked in their rooms. They had grown so much lately, she could hardly believe that their daughter was in kindergarten already, and that their son was walking and talking, well babbling mostly, and being all happy and excited about everything. “Hey, there you are!” she called out, when she spotted him from above, and bounded down the stairs and right into his arms. “What do you think? Too much?”

He couldn’t really hide his nervousness as he paid the uber driver and got out across the street from NSV. He hadn’t really checked out the bars downtown yet, so it was definitely a relief to do so with someone he knew -- even if the fact that this was Chris Evans he was talking about was.. well, mind-boggling to say the least.

Ten minutes too early, he realized with a sigh. It was habit to try and go as early as possible for him when he was anxious or stressed about something, and even though he knew he really had no reason for any of these emotions he couldn’t help it. He suddenly wished he’d brought his cigarettes; a habit he had picked up somewhere along the way of his band getting bigger, something to occupy his hands more than anything else. It had earned him enough scolding from both his bandmates and his management alike to reduce his smoking to the occasional one at parties or before shows, but he couldn’t quite stop completely.

He just stood outside of the bar, unsure if he should just get in and wait there when he suddenly spotted Chris.

“Hey, man. Good to see you agin. And you we’re right, the driver knew what bar I was talking about immediately, even when I fucked up and told him to drive to ‘Very Virgin’ instead...”

Pizza and a Cuddle || Soph & Chris

With their kids in bed, and the dogs down for the night, Sophia opened the door to the delivery guy gleefully and took the large pizza box off his hands, wandering back into the house with it. “I have something for us, and if you don’t come to claim half I might eat it all by myself,” she sing-songed, as she set it down on their coffee table and turned to lean in and kiss Chris happily. After the past weeks of being sad and mourning the death of Penny, she was finally feeling like herself again, and she showed it with reckless abandon. Disappearing in the kitchen, she came back with two bottles - a beer for him, and a lime and ginger juice with soda water for her - and sat down next to him. “So, we have napkins, we have a good film, we have drinks, we have this amazing pizza, and -” Soph looked around, before she slid down a little and made herself comfortable against his shoulder. “I have your shoulder to lean on. Perfect.” Grinning up at him happily, she leaned forward to reach for the pizza box and set it on both their thighs. “Let’s see who gets the last piece,” she challenged with a laugh.
