🍪 Holiday Baking 🍪 (Day 4 of 12 Days of Christmas Series)
Summary: Shawn and Y/N decide to bake Christmas cookies, but some mishaps slow then down along the way. Warnings: Swear words, mentions of being burned, idk?
“Shawn, what if we made some cookies? I’m in the mood for baking and I really want something sweet. Plus, I haven’t made my Italian Christmas Cookies this year.”
“Umm, is that even question? Of course, I would love to bake cookies with you! Where do we start?!” He jumped up from the couch and ran to the kitchen as Y/N sat laughing at him.
“Okay, someone’s a little too excited. I don’t even know if you have all the ingredients to make them. Let me check,” She walked towards Shawn’s pantry. “Hmm, bud have you ever baked anything? There’s literally no baking supplies in here.”
Shawn chuckled and scratched the back of his neck, “About that, I usually just go to my parent’s house to bake things because I never know the right things to buy.”
Y/N pecked him on the nose and grabbed his hand, pulling him towards the front door. “Well then I guess that means we have to go to the store.”

The second Y/N and Shawn walked down the baking aisle; he couldn’t contain himself. He spent a good five minutes staring at cookie sheets as Y/N just laughed and took a few pictures.
“Babe, I love how invested you are in finding a cookie sheet, but we really should start gathering the real items.”
“But Y/N, you don’t understand. I looove to bake, but I never know what to buy. Now that you’re here, you can help me. So, which one of these should I get? Or should I get all of them?” He started to pull the cookie sheets off the shelf and place them into the cart.
Y/N sighed and rolled her eyes at her boyfriend; he could be so childish. “Shawn, honey, I love you, but you really only need like three cookie sheets. Just grab two big ones and a small one.”
“I know you think I only need three, but do you not see how this pan has shapes on it? Isn’t that so cool? You don’t even need a cookie cutter.” He held up a gray pan to his face that had indented gingerbread men, Santa Clauses, and bells. His eyes crinkled as he smiled at her.
“Why did he even ask for my opinion if he wasn’t going to take it,” She mumbled to herself.
“Hey, I heard that! And it’s not that I didn’t want your opinion, it’s just that…okay well maybe I wasn’t ever going to take your opinion.” He placed the Christmas cookie sheet into the cart and pushed it towards her.
Y/N crossed her arms. “I know, but you’re cute so I forgive you,” She shot him a small smile before grabbing the front of the car and moving it down the aisle.
“Okay, do you need measuring cups?” He nodded his head once. “Grab the green pack and the red one. The green is teaspoons and tablespoons. The red is cups.”
“I know baby, I can read the label.” He sassed off to her. She slapped his arm softly and continued walking.
“So, we need sugar, flour, and baking powder,” she read off her list. When she glanced up from her shopping list, she was mildly impressed to see that all the items rested in the shopping cart.
Shawn winked at her, “What? I listen to you sometimes,” she giggled and looked back down at their list.
Shawn watched her, a slight smile on his face, his heart beating fast. He loved this girl. Gosh, he loved her with all his heart. He felt like the luckiest man on the planet to be able to call Y/N his. She peeked back at him before pointing at the milk.
“Get that one, it works the best for baking.” Shawn grabbed the milk out of the fridge, set it in the cart, and pulled Y/N into a hug.
She wrapped her arms around his waist and breathed him in. “What’s up babe?” She gently rubbed up and down his back.
“I just really love you, that’s all.”
“Yeah, I can really tell by the way you listened to me about the cookie sheets,” she huffed out, gently pulling away from him.
“Hey! They were on sale, and they were Christmas sheets!” He threw his hands up in the air defending himself as Y/N placed her hand on his cheek and pulled him into a kiss.
“I’m just teasing you. Let’s go get the extracts and the eggs.”

It took another half an hour for them to grab everything on their list (mostly because Shawn kept distracting Y/N). When they finally reached the checkout, they had more items than they went to the store for. Shawn would see a special Christmas edition of one of his favorite snacks and would buy it, to which Y/N would roll her eyes at but wouldn’t argue.
“That’ll be $350,” the cashier said, popping her gum. She stared Shawn up and down, but he didn’t notice because he was too busy racing Y/N to pay for their groceries.
Y/N beat him to it and stuck her card into the reader faster than Shawn could even blink. “Y/N! You were supposed to let me pay.”
The brunette-haired cashier sighed, clearly annoyed at the couple. “Have a nice day,” her monotone voice filled their ears, and they quickly grabbed the bags, placing them into their cart.
“Shawn, you pay for mostly everything. Plus, I was the one who suggested making Italian cookies.”
“Right, but I was the one who insisted on buying more than three cookie sheets like you suggested. We bought stuff for my kitchen, so you really should’ve let me pay.”
Y/N huffed. “And how many times in the past month that we’ve been together have you bought me a new dress? Or earrings? Or a necklace? You get me something once every week. And I’m very grateful for you, but dear, maybe let me pay for some of my own things. This is my gift to you.”
His cheeks flushed. “I love you and if you didn’t want all of those gifts, you should’ve just told me.”
“It’s not that I don’t want gifts, it’s just a little too often, and I feel bad when I can’t do the same in return for you.”
“Noted.” And that was how Y/N and Shawn worked. They communicated with each other very well, especially for a new couple who have barely started their relationship.

“Alright, now we add the flour.” Shawn poured the correct amount of flour into the bowl before mischievously smiling at Y/N.
“Do you want to know something that would be super fun? This,” and he smeared a handful of flour onto her face.
“You idiot! You’re going to make a mess. Might as well join in, but you have to clean it up,” she grabbed a cup worth of flour and poured it into Shawn’s dark hair, making it look like pepper.
“Oh! You mess with the hair? You’re going down.” He chased her around the house, container of flour in hand, and she squealed running away from him.
When they finally came to the agreement that it was a tie (flour was everywhere and they knew that clean up ensued) they popped the cookies into the oven and began tidying up Shawn’s condo.
“I thought you said I was going to have to clean this up,” he smirked towards her. Her face was covered in so much flour, you couldn’t tell where her white apron started and where her neck ended.
“I did say that. But I helped make the mess and we’re a team, so we clean it together.”
“A pretty good team I would say.”

When all the flour had been cleaned up, and Shawn and Y/N had both properly showered (Y/N was now wearing one of Shawn’s hoodies and some of his sweatpants, which, by the way, she looked adorable in and Shawn couldn’t help, but fawn over her) the cookies were finally ready to be taken out of the oven.
And that is when Shawn and Y/N realized their big mistake. They forget heating pads at the store! “Shit! If these don’t come out in the next few minutes, they’re going to burn in the oven and could set fire to your condo!”
Shawn sent Y/N a panicked look. “Umm, I’m going to go ask the neighbors if they have any, just keep a watch over those cookies.” He ran out the door leaving Y/N in the kitchen alone.
It was only a minute or so later that she smelt the burning of the cookies. “Shit, shit, shit!” She came up with the only solution she could think of. She grabbed a dishtowel from one of Shawn’s drawers and opened the open; smoke immediately poured out. She coughed and fanned it away, which to Y/N’s horror, set off the fire alarm. She reached her dishtowel covered hand into the oven and grabbed the pan.
It burned and it stung, and Y/N wanted to cry, but it was too late for that. The baking pan was hot, and the cookies were black. She threw the pan in the sink and turned on the faucet, running the cookies under it.
Meanwhile, Shawn’s neighbor had been unsuccessful in finding their cooking mitts in their messy drawers when he heard the fire alarm going off. His first thought was to get to Y/N. He ran out of his neighbor’s apartment and down the hall to his condo. When he finally got inside, he saw smoke in the air, his girlfriend on the ground clutching her hand, and the condo owner sitting next to her.
“Y/N, what happened? Are you okay? Did you get the cookies out of the oven?”
“Everything is fine Mr. Mendes. I think she is in a little bit of shock. I’m going to make an announcement that it was a false alarm. Will you be okay?”
Shawn nodded his head before scooping Y/N up into his arms. A few tears fell from her cheeks. “I wasn’t thinking except that your condo was going to be on fire. I grabbed a dishtowel to get the cookies out, but it’s not very protective and I burnt myself.”
Shawn’s heart dropped. The last thing he wanted was his girl to be hurt because he had been stupid enough to forget to buy oven mitts. “How bad is it? Let me see?”
“It’s not that bad, it’s only first degree. I’m more scared than hurt.” She held up her fingers and there were little blisters on her fingertips. He kissed each one and held her for a few more minutes.
“Let’s get you bandaged up.”

Y/N sat on Shawn’s bathroom counter as he wrapped her hand in gauze. “Sorry that I almost burnt your house down.”
He gently put his hand under her chin, turning her face towards his. “Hey, it’s not your fault. Plus, it will be a baking fail to never forget. We should make this a tradition every year, not the burning of the hands or the cookies, but the flour fight, the shopping for baking supplies—next year we definitely won’t forget oven mitts—and making Italian Christmas Cookies.” Y/N’s heart fluttered at the tender sentiment.
“I agree with you,” She kissed him on the lips and wrapped her gauzed hands around his neck. “Here’s to new traditions.”
A/N: This was a long one, but I hope you liked it! Thanks for reading. Part 5 will be out tomorrow.
