Here I Stand
Here's a concise reason for my continuing to be Christian, despite all of the doubts that gnaw at me. It has nothing to do with historic arguments about the empty tomb (like, "Who moved the stone?" or, "Who would die for something they knew was false?"). Nor does it hinge on whether the gospel authors were eyewitnesses. And it certainly is not because of the alleged reasonableness of traditional Christian doctrine. Here's the reason, summed up in one paragraph by Albert Schweitzer:
"Jesus means something to our world because a mighty spiritual force streams forth from him and flows through our time also. This fact can neither be shaken or confirmed by any historical discovery. It is the solid foundation of Christianity." (Albert Schweitzer, Quest of the Historical Jesus, p. 399).
Everything else may be debatable, but the truth in this statement isn't.
