CHRISTOPHER REYNE - "GLOW (KNOW YOUR SOUL)" [MUSIC]
When you're working as a solo artist it's tempting to fall into the trap of "guy with a guitar". Luckily, multi-instrumentalist Christopher Reyne isn't just a guy with a guitar. His record A Stranger at the Wheel is a great example of Reyne's mind for composition. It sounds complete, and has a good groove going throughout, giving off the vibe of a full band. As cliche as it may be to compare his vocals to Ben Gibbard, there really is an uncanny similarity in the cadences and harmonies. And that's not a knock, mind you -- Reyne clearly draws influence from great vocalists but manages to make it his own. But don't just take my word for it. GB! FEB2014 Mixtape by Christopher Reyne
"Glow (Know Your Soul)" is the featured track we have from Chris Reyne. Now, I'm a sucker for groovy bass lines, and this track does not disappoint. A soloed guitar intro sets the mood, but after this intro, there's a distinct shift in the groove. As a matter of fact, that's part of what makes this tune so strong -- how often the groove shifts. It goes from swinging and relaxed, to driving and momentous pretty effortlessly, and the whole tune does a great job of building tension. The piano is well-mixed, providing a good atmosphere without being overpowering. And then to top it all off, there this a creamy, haunting synth lead part-way through the tune that really gets me going. This part alone keeps me coming back for more. Really, all in all -- from vocals to rhythm to instrumentation to the mix -- "Glow" is a solid tune. Definitely worth checking out.
