Luminous Warping
Another way to think of gravity, the way I've always thought of it--correct or not-- is not so much as a force, but as a measurement; the clearest manifestation of the degree to which a mass warps spacetime around it.
When an object has enough mass, it may even alter the path of light--LIGHT! As far as we know, the fastest thing in the Universe. It's not even clear what light is, exactly. It behaves both like a wave and a particle, depending on the circumstances.
Depending on the circumstances.
As one body passes another in space, both their paths are altered even if the two never quite touch.
