The backstory I came up with is that Bicolor Spinel was originally twin Spinels: Green Spinel and Blue Spinel. They were inseparable, until they were broken in an accident. In an attempt to salvage the Spinels in some way, their remains were merged together which created Bicolor Spinel. His mood can go from happy and jovial (Green Spinel) to sad and depressed (Blue Spinel) in an instant

They were bubbled and put into storage (albeit after centuries of being used for the wishes of countless Gems), until they were found by a certain someone...
