Morning Devotion: The detestable cross
So detestable was this spectacle that the early church did not even portray the cross in art until crucifixion itself had been outlawed for 100 years; some 300 years after Christ was killed in this way.
Before then, the cross was too real; too offensive; too grotesque; too much a part of their experience. Before that, the blood on the cross still too wet, and the cries of those crucified still resonated too loudly in their ears; for them to take up pen and try and replicate.
Now, the cross is much more tame. Now, our cross symbolically bears not even a Christ: not even tonight. Now, maybe we venture out to be shocked; to be reminded; to have images brought up and facts of the death of Christ read and recounted. Tonight alone perhaps we accept the speaking of such monstrosity; tonight alone we allow the guilt and sorrow to seep in.
Tonight, you have come out to feel the gravity. Tonight, we do not temper our trembling. We know that this darkest night ends with Easter morning’s greatest light. We know that by this act, which seems to reek only of despair and defeat, there is actually the greatest of victory and triumph.
We KNOW, people of God, that tonight, our sins are washed in the blood of the lamb!
We KNOW that because Jesus bears the blast of God’s wraith that you receive God's love.p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }
