Datamoshing is the practice of intentionally using compression artifacts in digital video and animated GIFs that is sometimes to referred to as “glitch art.

Did some research on the net, KnowYourMeme has something on datamosh.

Leveraging data compression algorithms in way intentional inventors did not inend them to be used. You are using these vectors to move pixels of material that they are not supposed to be moving.

The best scenarios are when you have things like when you have a really colourful image that goes onto a lot of movement from another clip.

Final Video Project: The One Who Got Shocked

The final result  of my video, a bunch of supercuts of Friends characters getting shocked in the series. I decided to settle down with this because Friends is my favorite tv series, and when introduced to the first video technique which is the supercuts, i figured why not make a video out of something i love to watch so much.

I decided to go with the characters getting shocked because when watching. i realise they make a lot of shock gestures, and that each character has a different kind of gestures, which i will highlight in this supercut. I did not include Ross' or Chandler's shock expressions because when i watch the series, i realise that their gestures arent as big as the other 4.

1 minute movie

So today is the day that the movie task is due. After showing Andy my video in my last tutorial he commented that i should use this footage to tell some kind of story to prove that raw footage like a home video will easily tell a believable story even if its not true. So with that in mind I decided to change the stereotypical comical music that was the soundtrack for the movie and instead replaced it with a piano piece. This small change helped so convey the importance music has on presenting a type of narrative. Anyways after changing the music I think included some sentences to tell a story about a girl called Mia who went missing-basically it turned out to be a tribute video the Mia. Overall  I know the footage I have has a lot more potential than just this simplistic idea but I am happy with what I produced.

When sifting through the array of footage I had gathered it almost turned into a compulsive, obsessive task. It was interesting to note that although Sheldon’s laugh is unique he has different types of laughs which become more evident the more you listen to them. You obsess over it and it bothers you that it’s not a certain way and you end up narrowing  down the laugh to a specific category.

Processes, Methods:

The processes and methods in making my supercut were fairly straightforward from a technical standpoint – watch the Big Bang, find laugh and cut it all together – however the actual labour component of the work was extensive and very time consuming.

I started off with watching clips on YouTube with Sheldon laughing. I searched “Sheldon Laughing” “Sheldon Laughing Compilation” and “Sheldon best moments”. From all these clips however I only found about 10 seconds worth of laughing which was quite discouraging but I continued to dig. I watch the “best of the big bang theory” from season 1 all through to season 8 and managed to pick up a few more laughs. However, I still lacked and I knew there must have been more so ended up driving to the video store and taking out seasons 4 and 7 which I watched all the way through. I managed to find a few additional laughs aswell as additional fill in footage to add story elements to my video.

I had documented each instance a laugh occurred by season, episode and scene. I had found the material and now I needed to physically attain it. I download each individual episode that a laugh had occurred in in order to obtain the best quality version of each clip and then began to sift through each and cut out the part I wanted. I used windows movie maker.

Final Video: Inspiration

In deciding on a video to supercut, I wanted to make something simple yet unique. I watched a ton of short supercuts on YouTube in hope of finding some inspirational. Here’s a list of the videos I navigated through and which I found particularly interesting:

I liked these clips as they each demonstrated a sort of storyline. They weren’t just cliché Supercuts that complied together cliché clips from a series of different sources; they flowed to make a story. It was as if each clip was connected to each other and worked in harmony with the next to ultimately allow people to engage and follow along as if watching a short film.

Both of these got me thinking of an idea for my supercut. What they had in common was that the both emphasized on a specific and unique sound; sounds that only Will Smith could make; a specific type of scream. I then jogged my memory for a unique trait or sound that was specific to someone or something yet exhausted myself with no ideas. It then came to me whilst I was watching the Big Bang Theory on TV. Sheldon – a person that acts in a very specific and unconventional manner. What was particularly unique to him? Of course, his laugh!
