for those who have not seen lego ninjago, which of these things did not happen
a main character commits genocide against a race of furries
they go to space to fight robot clones and metal eating bugs
a ghost possesses the main character and then gets a drink at a bar
girl kills her adopted family only to resurrect a demon to be her new father
trans catgirl successfully overthrows the government with a 2 min youtube video
a genie kidnaps a child and forces her to marry him
a main character gets drugged and sacrificed to a fake serpent goddess
man pretends to call his dead mom to guilt trip his friend
girl kills her father in a planned car crash because he likes her sister more
the main couple only kisses 2 times in 15 seasons

saw a video that said ‘when a found family’s motto gains a different meaning at the end of the series’ and like. dare i say ninja never quit.
at the beginning of the series it was motivating. they were little kids pushing themselves to be brave, trying to encourage each other that they can do this.
but now it’s borderline self destructive. they never quit, they never get a break, no matter what happens they have to push through, regardless of the cost.
zane holds onto the golden armor even as it starts breaking him apart, because he has to protect his friends, he can’t quit until the overlord is gone
jay holds out in season 6 even while being tortured, trying to convince himself that things would be okay if he just keeps going a little longer, that he can save everyone he just has to not quit
lloyd nearly and does get himself killed trying to defeat garmadon/the oni in s8-10, because ninja never quit.
nya sees the city get entirely destroyed, and realizes her only option is to give herself over to the sea. doesn’t matter the consequences, ninja never quit so if there’s a way to save everyone she has to do it even if it will kill her physical body
i’m sure there are tons more examples this is just off the top of my head, but like. it’s so heartbreaking to see them push themselves further and further as the show goes on, no matter the consequences. because ninja never quit right?
i’m sure kai understood that there was a very good chance the other ninja did not survive the merge
and so really part of me thinks his ‘i have to find them; i have to see them again’ is just him looking for closure
he is going to keep going until he finds them, whether he finds them dead or alive it doesn’t matter, he just has to see them
thinking so much about kai being forced to be a bystander. originally the main character and now stuck being a witness to the suffering of everyone around him. the people he promised to protect. first it was nya getting kidnapped, then lloyd fighting garmadon/the overlord, then zane’s death, then lloyd getting possessed, then cole turning into a ghost, then lloyd being killed by his father, then nya turning into the sea
honestly the list could be more comprehensive, but its so crazy to think that the worst things kai has gone through have been watching the people he loves suffer.
that he’s never the one who gets hurt. that all he wants is to protect them and he never can. that he’s said before that he wishes he could take their place and get hurt himself if it would spare them the pain, but instead he’s forced to watch and be helpless. screaming crying throwing up
i think i’ve drawn nya more than any other character so here’s the evolution of my nya design :))
i love that you can tell when i really got a grasp on her design, although i still can’t really decide if i like her hair dark brown or black idk
