Cigarette Case made by Italian Prisoners of War. WW2. (1941/46).North Africa Campaign. A great example of an Italian prisoner of war made cigarette case. This was a typical British 8th Army bring back war trophy / souvenir. Beautifully made. These unique cigarette cases were usually created from salvaged high quality alloy from downed aircraft or from supply tins or trays. These are sturdy and have quite thick metal and are nicely engraved and inlaid. They were much sought after by all allied troops in North Africa and beyond. This all took place during a time when almost 100 000 Italian POWs were held captive at the Zonderwater camp during the years 1941-1946. This is a Trench Art Cigarette Case. Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials they had available to them. We've just gotten in this rather handsome WW1 era sterling silver cigarette case. It was given as a mark of esteem to a colleague of the Great Northern Railway in 1917. Made from solid silver by Henry Williamson Ltd silversmiths and hallmarked for Birmingham, 1916. The case has a sprung hinge and strong firm clasp.
