I found what I thought was a beautiful caterpillar, but it’s actually a sawfly larva! Still beautiful nonetheless, I’ve never seen such a stunning banana yellow on a land animal before! I always think of caterpillars/grubs as the nudibranchs of the land because of their incredible variety of patterns and colors :) What a delightful surprise on my walk home from class today!

Not 100% sure about this one, but seems likely that it is Cimbex americana, the elm sawfly, but in any case, quite the boss sawfly.  

There is something interesting going on here.  If you meet some insects at a party and ask the question:  Insect, show me your fluorescent orange parts they will only show you their antennae and their tarsal segments.  Why?  Perhaps a National Science Report is required here.

Birch Sawfly (Cimbex femoratus), larva, family Cimbicidae, Warsaw, Poland

Sawflies are in the order Hymenoptera, closely related to wasps, and many species have larvae that resemble Lepidopteran caterpillars (such as this species).

As the name suggests, the larvae of this species feeds on Birches.
