I found what I thought was a beautiful caterpillar, but it’s actually a sawfly larva! Still beautiful nonetheless, I’ve never seen such a stunning banana yellow on a land animal before! I always think of caterpillars/grubs as the nudibranchs of the land because of their incredible variety of patterns and colors :) What a delightful surprise on my walk home from class today!
Does anyone have any idea what species this beautiful caterpillar is? I’ve never seen it before!!!! I think it must be some sort of tussock moth caterpillar based on the black tufts of hair, but I can’t find anything that looks the same!
Found in Bellingham, Washington on an alder tree in a mixed deciduous/evergreen forest.
How cute is this fuzzy friend? It’s a Bumble Bee Scarab, Lichnanthe vulpina. I’ve never seen one before and I immediately fell in love. Seen on an island at the Potholes Reservoir, WA
