Cimbex americana

I found what I thought was a beautiful caterpillar, but it’s actually a sawfly larva! Still beautiful nonetheless, I’ve never seen such a stunning banana yellow on a land animal before! I always think of caterpillars/grubs as the nudibranchs of the land because of their incredible variety of patterns and colors :) What a delightful surprise on my walk home from class today!

OMG THIS WAS SO GROSS (But REALLY fascinating) First day of Micro our teacher was showing us these clean agar petri dishes and she opened one and was like “Touch it, feel its flexibility (from the agar)!” and we all touched it, then she though to open another and do the same thing so she could incubate one at body temp and one at enviro temp. AND THERE ARE FREAKING FLY MAGGOTS IN THE DISHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Along with a lot of different colonies) the last three images are close ups of the live moving larva. the scratch marks are where it traveled
