iced coffee cincau | source
the soybean factory 豆香, chinatown, kuala lumpur.
this new dessert place is one of many new cafes and eateries in the newly renovated area in chinatown, which is a great tourist attraction. came here after lunch with colleagues to find something nice.
i decided to order their butterfly pea tau fu fah with cincau (grass jelly). you can opt to have the soya beancurd hot or cold and i pick cold because i wanted something refreshing. there are also a lot of other options on their menu, you can customize the toppings for your beancurd.
the soya beancurd comes with soy milk and i picked brown sugar syrup, it’s light and not overly sweet and you can always adjust how much to put. the light blue color does make the dessert looks pretty, but it has no taste. soya beancurd itself was okay, i expected the texture to be smoother though. the grass jelly is nice but kinda little.
overall, i find it alright, but it’s not something i would queue for or visit the place on purpose for. so i don’t really understand why the crowd would go crazy for it, perhaps everyone is just following a trend. anyway, the cafe has nice seating area which is comfortable and great to take photos as well.
GRASS JELLY!
Grass Jelly and Luo Han Guo Drinks
Under the hot sun, we are looking for something refreshing to quench our thirst. Walking down the street we had seen a lot of tourists were having a cup of drink. When we walked through halfway of the street, we found a stall that sell homemade grass jelly drink or luo han guo drink in front of an antique store. So we decided to enjoy a glass of luo han guo drink to quench the thirst.
It was also a way to cool ourselves down after a sweaty walk down the Jonker Street. The grass jelly drink is at only RM 1.50 and luo han guo drink at RM2 for take away. Honestly, it was definitely not as sweet as others did. Besides the wallet friendly price, we mustn't doubt the nutritional benefits of luo han guo, one of which is longevity! What's more important was that it still managed to work its magic by refreshing our parched throat under the hot Malaccan weather.
Luo han guo drink is kind of herbal tea but unlike most medicinal herbal teas, it doesn’t tastes bitter and surprisingly with naturally sweet. It is a pleasant cooling beverage that no needs other ingredients to enhance its flavor and taste. Adding the longan did bring some taste to the drink, making it a good dessert while still maintaining its medicinal properties.
