12. Any books that disappointed you?
I go into most books blind, especially if I see their names pop up often on tumblr, but man, I simply did not care At All about The Raven Cycle. (No shade to people who like it.) Like, I had books/series that I disliked more (including tumblr faves — the Simon Snow series was simply not good, sorry not sorry), but I had a vibe I was expecting that wasn't delivered.
I really did not enjoy Sandman. Read the first volume, figured I might just be missing something, then DNFd the second volume. I love V for Vendetta and Watchmen (I know Alan Moore didn't write Sandman, it's a genre sample) and between those and the tumblr/Netflix hype, I was just expecting ... more.
I technically finished it a week before 2024, but it was for January's book club, and I'm still so mad a year later that I am taking advantage of this soapbox: I hated Cinderella is Dead. As someone who ardently loves folk tales, adaptations, satires, and updates/remixes, it just felt obvious that the author hates this fairy tale and was trying to (as she saw it) update the values to reflect her outdated version of feminism. I came in with the highest of hopes and Hate, Loathe, and Despise this book for taking such a promising premise and doing it worse than anyone has ever done it before.
22. What’s the longest book you read?
TECHNICALLY the longest I finished this year was Les Mis (FMA is 1468 pages, not counting the foreword), but I started that in 2018, so it kinda feels like it doesn't count. I'm currently reading Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex which StoryGraph puts at 746 pages (the audiobook is 39 hours), and I think I'll finish it this year, but I haven't yet. I started and finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt this year, which is listed as 784 pages but was only 32 hours, So Like. Idk. Dealer's choice.
