Girls baseball anime, ranked
1. Major 2nd 2. Taishou Baseball Daughters 3. Tamayomi 4. Princess Nine 5. Cinderella Nine From the bottom: I wasn't even able to finish Cinderella Nine. The Love Live character designs are faintly off-putting (doesn't help that the animation is stiff), and it's trying to do both serious drama and CGDCT, which irritates me. It's been a while, though, so maybe I need to give it another try. For a while I was going to have 3 and 4 be tied, because Princess Nine has better animation. But the longer I think about it, the more I get irritated with Princess Nine's story, with players having Magic Named Skills instead of actual baseball fundamentals. And then of course the ending is extremely infuriating, all tied up in Het Nonsense as it is. Tamayomi has a bad rap because, well, it looks like ass. But it's the only other show on this list besides Major 2nd that actually cares about the baseball as the primary thing, with a team where everyone is competent. Which, the director of Major also directed this, so. It's like if Big Windup was about girls...and also looked like ass. But really, the thing that makes Tamayomi look like ass is just the faces and the voices. I can deal with very limited animation, a la Marimite. But if you're going to do that, you have to make your talking heads very nice to look at and very nice to listen to. Tamayomi's body animation is just fine, even good, but apparently the folks at Studio A-cat don't care about faces or non-short hair, so they all look jank. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of the VAs are doing these very annoying screechy moeblob squeaks, instead of sounding like real people, as well as making half of the characters sound the same. Whoever decided they should sound like that in the booth should be shot. Taishou Yakyuu Musume is the promise of Cinderella Nine realized, where you can have baseball and CGDCT, but actually compelling. The secret is that they don't take the plot too seriously (especially the Het Nonsense), but they have a very strong grasp on character and take their baseball playing seriously. The simpler character designs allow the animation to be more vibrant, as well, and they have a strong handle on comedic timing. I'm still really annoyed by the ending, though. And finally we have Major 2nd, which not only takes the baseball seriously, has strong personalities and development for all of its characters, lets them be truly competent, lets them win, but it also even has a good budget! It's a miracle! Although I feel like we're heading for a depressing end for them in the next season, given the serious themes that they're addressing.

Two episodes into Cinderella Nine and I don’t have much to say about the show so far. Based around a group of girls starting a school baseball team, the story so far has been introducing characters and presenting their skill, or lack there of, in the sport. We've got a mild mix, appearing to have at least three girls who've shown athletic ability in the past, one who hasn't, and another I can’t gauge yet. This seems, like a few of my other shows this season, kind of generic, but I’m open to see if this goes somewhere over the span of the season.
