Feat. Gladio/Cindy
Cindy + Clarus = “I didn’t do it!”
Word count: 934
She kissed him. It wasn’t the first time, and it was full ofemotion, and she fought to suppress the ache in her chest as he forced himselfto break it. He didn’t say anything, even after she called after him.
“Come back soon, ya hear?!”
Cindy sank to her knees in the room of the hotel, thankfulto be alone in that moment. She wanted to have faith that Gladio would comeback. A shield of the king wasn’t just any ordinary man, and he wasn’t. He wasevery bit of hard work, devotion, and love that made him perfect. With everyfiber of her being, she wanted to keep him there. She wanted to hold him forherself, the world be damned, but she wouldn’t. If anyone knew the trifles ofbeing married to your work, well, it was her. He had a job to do, and she wasn’tgoing to be the reason he shamed his family and honor.
Days passed. The light was still hidden beneath the darknessof the miasma and daemon-wrought pollution, and she had just stepped into herroom at Holly’s place when she felt it. At first, it was like someone hadstabbed her in the back, then it spread around her, chilling her to the bone.Heat replaced the cold, and the pain subsided, leaving her winded. Around her,the room was a bluish-grey. Now, she didn’t pretend to understand the magicksof the royal bloodline, or how the glaives had learned to harness it, but shewas adept enough to tell that this was some kind of witchcraft beyond the likesof which she had ever seen.
Before her suddenly was a man, his back turned to her, donned in some kind of robes. He was bald – not a single hair on his head, andhis arms were crossed in front of him.
“Can I help you?” she asked, and the man turned to face her.Age lines circled his kind eyes, eyes that she would recognize anywhere. Shehad spent the last ten years staring at those eyes, and the years before the ofthe photo in Paw-paws garage of the man who stood with her. She faltered.
“You’re…Gladio’s father, ain’t ya?”
The old man put his hands up, a guilty expression on hisfeatures.
“I didn’t do it!” he exclaimed, taking Cindy aback, thenchuckled at her shocked features. “It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Cindy took several long moments to think about what washappening. She knew this man, Clarus, she believed his name was, to be deadover a decade ago, fallen with King Regis. Whatever magic this was, she hopedit wasn’t some evil curse, or an ill omen.
“How’re you here? You a zombie or somethin’?” she shook herhead. This was all too wild for her. Hadn’t she had enough on her plate?
“I sure hope not,” Clarus laughed loudly, though if the king’smagic was involved, she assumed she was the only one who could hear it. It wasa nice laugh, though, and it reminded her of Gladio. She smiled. “I don’t really know. My guess is it hassomething to do with the past kings and the magic granted to them by thecrystal, but I can’t be sure.” Cindy nodded, following along thus far.
“I wanted to meet you, though,” he continued. “I’ve seen myson’s heart. You’ve made him truly happy these last ten years.” At that, Cindyblushed. Of course, she kind of already knew that, but it was nice to hear itfrom someone that wasn’t as crotchety as Paw-paw (because no one was goodenough for her in his eyes), and of course, Holly, because best friends arebiased.
“That all?” she giggled to herself, surprisingly calm. Clarusbeamed at her, nodding
“I don’t know how long this will last. I haven’t much time, but please, know that my son will treat you like you were his own queen, andhe, in turn, he lucky to have you by his side.” Clarus’s words echoed in herhead, and Cindy found herself at a loss for words as she adverted her gazesheepishly. A queen? Naw, that was too grand a title for her. She bit her lip.
“I must take my leave, Miss Cindy. Please, look after myboy.” When Cindy looked back at Clarus, there was a sad smile on his wrinkledface, and…was he crying? “And you give ol’ Cid a hug?”
Cindy stepped closer, her eyes locked onto his own. With atrembling hand, she reached out slowly, and was shocked that she was able totouch the ghost in front of her. Gently, she wiped the tears from his eyes, andsmiled. She hated seeing those eyes so sad.
“I will. You take care, now.”
Clarus left her almost as abruptly as he came, leaving Cindyto stand in the middle of her room with her hand suspended in midair. Tearssprung from her eyes, and she wiped them away, pretending they were Gladio’shands instead of her own. Maybe she was going crazy. Maybe he wasn’t going tocome back and that was her only chance to say anything.
Her knees hit the floor, and she covered her face, finallyallowing herself to breakdown in the darkness of her room. She didn’t care ifanyone heard her, or if she was weak for missing a man with a duty to the king. She just wanted him to come home.
Morning came with the dawn, and with the dawn, so didGladio.
Send me two numbers 1-15 and another number 1-195 and I’ll write you a drabble.
